Fun of the Farmhouse
Farmhouse Deli - Pie Reviews
I have so far been struggling to find good pies in my local area in Gloucester. I was therefore quite pleased to realise that Farmhouse Deli in the city centre sell pies that they make themselves. Farmhouse is an upmarket butcher/deli shop, primarily focusing on meat. They have a shops in Gloucester and Cheltenham as well as outlet in Gloucester market. I quite liked the range of things on offer, they do gluten free sausages/burgers as well as tasty Single Gloucester cheese which is unique to the local area. The staff seemed friendly and interested when I explained about Pierate and my new mission to find the best pies in Gloucestershire.
There is a good selection of traditional pie flavours with both family sized and individual sizes available. Having been in a few times I have found that not all flavours of pie are available all the time. You just have to go with the flow of what they have. Whilst the flavours might seem a bit unoriginal compared to some of the top unusual flavours of pie we have tried, as we often say, our favourite flavour is still steak. So with that in mind, I started off by picking up an individual steak and ale for £2.40 (or you can get 3 for £6.75). Given that you have to cook the pie at home and hence wait for it to heat up I also go a Pork pie at £1.80 to eat while I was waiting! Again it was one of those frustrating occasions where the pie could have been available hot but wasn't. I will try not to hold this against them.
The Pork pie was up first and it looked really great in my opinion. It had a deep brown colour and a nice curvy crimp. Unfortunately looks can be deceiving as this pie wasn't quite as good as the hot meat pies, despite looking better! The pastry was generally pretty good, it was nice and crunchy which is my preference for a pork pie. The pie was well filled with porky goodness with only some small gaps around the edge. It was pretty big for an individual pie so the price of £1.80 compared favourably with upmarket supermarket pork pies. Sadly, the filling didn't quite do it for me. I found it overly salty and fatty which meant it became a bit sickly after a while. In fact I didn't fancy eating all of it in one go, I only had half which isn't a good sign. There were also some bits that were too chewy. In general I thought the filling could have had a better texture, it was in one solid, processed lump.

Next up was the Steak & Ale, one I was anticipating to be good given the smell coming from the oven. It also looked good with a lovely, glossy glaze. Unfortunately I think perhaps I hadn't cooked it for long enough (it didn't come with instructions). The pastry tasted a bit like the ready made pastry that I often use for my pies at home. Whilst under-cooked in some places it was nicely crunchy at the edge. The filling was strong with a decent amount of steak. The pieces of steak were flavoursome as you might expect from a butchers but they could have been a bit more tender. It is a difficult balance to get right because it is quite satisfying to have something to get your teeth into. The flavour to the gravy was that of a fairly generic steak and ale but given the decent size and amount of meat, I thought this pie was great value.

Given that I suspected that I may not have cooked the steak & ale pie for long enough I popped in to Farmhouse to get another. This time the only small pies were Chicken, Ham and Leek so I grabbed one of these. Confusingly it had a Chicken & Mushroom sticker on it but cutting into it revealled it definitely was Ham & Leek. The amount of ham and leek was nearly perfect; there was just enough to add flavour whilst keeping the chicken the star of the show. I find too much ham can make a pie too salty. Having cooked the pie for longer the pastry was much better (and perhaps from a different batch). It was crunchy on the outside and gooey in the middle although perhaps a little too crunchy on top. The quality of the chicken was top notch, not at all processed. It showed that this was a pie from a butchers shop. It was filled with a thick sauce and held together so well that it was easy to eat it by hand. Overall this was a very enjoyable pie, even if it didn't do anything quite special enough to challenge at the top of our pie rankings. It will certainly inspire me to try more of the Farmhouse pies as I think they are good value at this price.

I'm in the mood for Grumpies of Cornwall pies
Grumpies of Cornwall pie review
Cornwall might be more famous for its pasties, but we're thrilled that Grumpies of Cornwall avoided the obvious and chose to make top Cornish pies instead (well, we're not Pastyrate, after all!) And even more thrilling was that we got our Pierating hands on some of them! Will Grumpies put me in the mood for pie, or just put me in a mood?
This is a selection of 'Chicken Gammon and Leek', 'Steak and Ale', and 'Blue Cheese and Walnut'. The first thing that strikes me is the packaging is pretty cool, with a cartoon of the two grumpies and the transparent window to admire your pie. It's a clever packaging design.
The proof is in the eating, though - should Grumpies change their name to Grumpasties?
First up is the Grumpies Steak and Ale pie. Neat little touch there with the bull notched into the pastry. I like it. The pie is in great condition and the golden brown colour is spot on. There's no leakage or boil out, and no blemishes or cracks on the surface.
Cracking in to the pie, the pastry gives way nicely - it's crisp and not too soft. There is a slight air gap, however - the pie isn't filled completely to capacity. The pie also isn't particularly big - I think you would certainly want this as part of a meal rather than as a meal in itself. However, I see that the filling is of good quality, with lots of nice chunks of steak and some mushrooms too.
Eating the pastry, I realise this is some of the best pastry I've had. It has a wonderful crispy layer on the outside, and melts in your mouth as you bite into it. The content also tastes delicious. The ale comes through quite strongly, I feel, which personally I like but others made find it too strong. The steak is not chewy. I really like the taste of this pie, and the pastry is excellent. However it is a little let down by its air-gap and its cost (which, at £3.50 a pie I think is maybe a bit on the expensive side for not a particularly big pie).

Grumpies of Cornwall Steak and Ale pie

Next up is the pie that most intrigues me - the Blue Cheese and Walnut. (Side note: As Matthew over at Food and Geography will no doubt tell you, Stilton is a protected food name so any blue cheese not made in a specific geographical area can't be called Stilton). Just when I was going to suggest that Grumpies use a local Cornish blue cheese, I check their website and see that they do just that! Yes, apparently it's a creamy Cornish blue in this pie - excellent, we love it when companies use local produce.
Again, like the steak and ale pie, this pie is in excellent condition with a perfect colour. On opening up the pie, the creamy contents threaten to spill out over the plate in a tidal wave of yummy goodness before I can get a photo of the contents. As you'll spot, there's an air gap here similar to that in the steak and ale pie. However, the pastry is again sublime, and the filling is also very tasty and deliciously rich!
I must say, this pie is probably rather an acquired taste - I love blue cheese (and I think everyone should!) but I know many people that would run a mile at the sound of blue cheese and walnut. I might also add that the filling also doesn't look 100% appetising, and was a little runny, I felt.
Nonetheless, I would heartily recommend you give this pie a shot. It's delicious and the pastry is excellent.

Grumpies of Cornwall Blue Cheese and Walnut Pie

And now onto the Chicken, Gammon and Leek.
Similar to the other two pies, this pie is of perfect colour and condition. Can't wait to tuck in!
This cross-sectional view shows that the filling is of high quality, although there is a slight air-gap again. I felt the pie was a little low on volume of filling, but the filling that was there was a delicious combination of gammon, chicken and leek. The sauce had a nice consistency and the chicken was not at all chewy. Again, the pastry was excellent. This pie would be the perfect accompaniment to a glass of crisp white wine.

Smoking hot pie at the Battersea Pie Station
Winstone (Steak and Kidney) Pie Review at Battersea Pie
Station, Covent Garden, London
When you need some fuel for the afternoon ahead, it's
good to station yourself at a top pie shop in town and get pie inside you! That
is exactly what I did when ready to combust with hunger on my Bank Holiday,
with a non-renewable pie in my sights! So as I was meeting a friend near Covent
Garden, I popped in to the Pie-er Plant that is Battersea Pie Station, ready
for some pie fuel!
As for the content, the chunk of ham was very flavoursome
and quite stringy, not chewy at all and a good addition. The chicken wrapped
round the ham and was the major filling. It was a bit tangy, perhaps slightly over
seasoned but then you do expect more seasoning with your pork pie style pies!
The chicken tasted pretty good, though harder to tell how tender it was in a
pork pie style.

Garden, I popped in to the Pie-er Plant that is Battersea Pie Station, ready
for some pie fuel!
I ordered two pies – one a hot pie to eat then and also a
cold pork pie to take away. Firstly I ate the Winstone pie, which was a Steak and
Kidney pie eaten hot while on the premises. And I’m pleased to say that the Winstone
was a winner. Inside the golden pastry were good tender chunks of steak. The kidney
tasted good to and not overpowering the taste of the pie. The gravy was nice,
not too runny and very flavoursome. While the pastry was quite crisp, it wasn’t
too thick and held the pie together well. The condition was top notch with a golden
crust topping. It was nice pastry, reasonably solid but didn’t weigh you down
like some thicker pastry can. I also very much liked the Battersea pie bowl it
was presented in. It was quite pricey for a pie at £5 to eat in (pie only,
trimmings are extra) but was in Central London and Covent Garden after all, so
can't get a much cooler place to eat pie! Pie fuel much appreciated!

Chicken & Ham Pork Pie Review at Battersea Pie
Station, Covent Garden, London
Certainly not something I'd come across before, this pie
was pork pie by name but no pork by nature! However the nice ham made up for
the porkie in the title! The pie had a very pleasant crust which was quite
light and flaky on top and sides, a little thicker on the base. It was a lot
lighter and less strongly flavoured than your traditional pork pie.

The colour was good and the capacity quite strong, though
there were gaps where you would normally expect jelly (which was fortunately
absent, as I think this would have ruined the flavour). It was certainly an
interesting for a change but I wouldn't regularly go for it. Marks for novelty
though. There was the issue of the meat flavours not being split very evenly
throughout, with a large clump of ham off centre, and there was a bit of fat
within the chicken section, but certainly a positive meat experiment!
Would love to try a 'meat and gravy' version of this pie
though - reckon that would give me fuel for thought!
