With a Lidl bit of luck, this will be a great pie
Lidl Deluxe Steak and Stilton Pie Review
This is a steak and stilton pie from Lidl's own brand Deluxe range. This is a finalist from The Grocer Own Label Food and Drink Awards 2014, so let's hope for some Lidl surprises!
Colour: The pies come frozen, and straight out of the packet they look very pale from the raw dough. Thankfully, after a spell in the oven they come out golden brown, although the lid surface doesn't look quite glossy enough for me - needs more glaze.
Condition: The condition of the pie is good, with no cracks, boil out or breakages.
Cheapness: The pie was fairly cheap. For 2 pies, the price was something like £2.80 (unfortunately I can't remember the exact figure), so at about £1.40 each these pies are at the lower end of supermarket prices.
Content: There are some good chunks of steak, and quite a strong flavour of stilton. Certainly not a pie for those who don't like blue cheese (I do). The pastry was crispy and flaky.
Capacity: Most of the inside of the pie does seem to be taken up by pastry, leaving not much room for filling. These pies are therefore not very filling as they have poor capacity.
Chewiness: The steak is tender and not chewy. It's good!
Consistency: There was a decent amount of gravy in this pie, but I still could have done with a little bit more.
Overall, this was a good pie with good quality pastry and tasty filling, although this pie's capacity let it down. Strong flavour of stilton.

A Lidl bit of Christmas Mince Pie magic!
Lidl Snowy Lodge Mince Pie Review
Having been highly commended by Which? Magazine in a blind taste test, but not having had any of their pies rated on www.pierate.co.uk, I stopped off at Lidl in Manchester. Purchasing both the mini pies and the standard version (thus a total of 21 pies for only £2.84) I set about rating them.

The standard Lidl pies came in a box of 12 at just 12.4ppp. Quite remarkable really, when a lot of mince pies can be anywhere from 25ppp to £1 or more! The pies were in quite good condition, although just on picking the pie out of the silver foil case, I could see cracks appearing between the side and lid pastry, which wasn't ideal. That said, when it came to biting into the pastry it was nice and light, crumbling perfectly in the mouth and not dry at all. The pastry was golden and buttery.
The content looked on first appearance like it would be more sauce and less fruit, however upon taking a few bites I was left with a nice, slightly lingering fruity flavour but also several pieces of fruit to chew over! A little too chewy perhaps and not quite as much fruit as some mince pies I've had (and believe me, I've reviewed a few mince pies lately!!!) but that didn't stop me thoroughly enjoying this mince pie! And at less than 12.5ppp it's hard not to say "no" to another... and another... and another...

It is a good, affordable Christmas treat. One that will only leave a Lidl dent in your wallet but a far greater dent on your waistline! Especially if you eat 11 of them...

A Lidl Mince Pie goes a long way!
Lidl Snowy Lodge Luxury Mini Mince Pie Review
Often you don’t want a little mince pie, especially when you could get a larger version. But how about a luxury Lidl mince pie? Yep, the low value German retailer have produced some tasty mince pies over the years. Ask Which? Magazine, who blind taste tested the Lidl Snowy Lodge Luxury Mince Pies and rated them as their number 2! But enough about that... what did the Pierateers think?!
Well the pies were pretty mini - that cannot be denied! At two bites per pie, I therefore ate 3, just to make sure I got a full flavour of the filling. The capacity was very strong, filled with nice, moist fruity mincemeat which complimented the buttery short crust pastry. The pastry crumbled upon biting but held together well when the pie was being bitten into. Unfortunately a few of the lids broke off rather to easily or cracked rather easily, but in general the condition was good.
Small pies do sometimes suffer from a poor filling:pastry ratio, due to having such a small centre to fill and a lot of pastry encasing it. However with such a strong capacity of filling in these pies, I never thought these pies were too pastry heavy. The filling was quite sweet and just lightly spiced, which suited my taste buds just fine, and there was just a light brandy taste to them to improve the mincemeat flavour. While the colour could have been a bit stronger (the photo demonstrates that the lid is rather see-through), the cheapness was okay at £1.35 for 9 luxury mini mince pies – 15p per pie - (though the fact you could buy 12 full sized Lidl (non-luxury) mince pies for £1.49 means these aren’t the cheapest).
A nice little pie which would certainly please the dinner guests at your Christmas pie party and be a Lidl conversation starter!

Note: This pie was also reviewed by guest Pierateer Rufus who, while rather more generous with his scoring than I, did also very much enjoy the pies.
