An Urban Pie TRAINing exercise

Angus Steak and Lamb, Potato and Mint Pie Reviews from Urban Pie
Urban Pie are one of our many friends in the pie world. We have been there many more times than the 4 previous pie reviews indicate and they were kind enough to also blog about us! They called us 'pie experts' back in our early days of 2010. Aww, thanks guys! Perhaps this kind sentiment was in part down to our acclaim of this 'fast-food' pie format. It was our first taste of such a thing, before we discovered similar such ventures in London.
Pierateers RAS and SJL had a quick visit between changes of trains at Birmingham New Street. The place had new options since SJL’s last visit with new veg and potato wedge options. SJL opted for the Angus Steak and RAS took on the Lamb, Potato and Mint pie. The staff were very friendly which really helped to make a nice atmosphere. They even posed for a Pierate/Urban Pie promo photo.

However there was no time to waste, as the Pierateers had trains to catch! They were therefore fully capitalising on the take-away option of these pies. Sealing up their pie boxes, they travelled to the train station and ate their pies on the respective trains they were catching – not the easiest way to eat pie smothered in gravy but sometimes you need to eat pie on the go! Both pies passed their TRAINing exercise with flying colours! Pierateer RAS actually finished his pie off at home – eating the remainder of his pie from the box in front of the Box!

But enough of that – let’s dig into the pies!

Here are SJL's thoughts on the Angus Steak:

I am a big fan of the Urban Pie pastry because it does hold its structure well. The pies look fantastic and what I consider proper pies to look like. It also maintains some crispiness on the outside while being gooey on the inside. Unfortunately this time I also had some very thick pieces of pastry on the sides. These were a bit too doughy and hence the pie lost score. I am sure that this isn't representative though as I have had a number of Urban Pies before. The meat and gravy was classic steak pie fare. The taste of beef was intense and while it didn't do anything unique, everything it did do it did very well. Coming as a good value meal it was another Urban Pie experience I really enjoyed. It was just a shame it had been so long between visits!
And the thoughts of RAS on the Lamb, Potato and Mint:

The pie was certainly packed to capacity, with crisp top pastry which comes as standard at Urban Pie. The base and side pastry were a little thicker than ideal but it did hold the content in well. The content itself was interesting. Certainly anyone who knows Pierateer RAS well will know he has been banging on about having a “shepherd’s pie pie” for a while now – i.e. a lamb mince and potato Shepherd’s “pie” fully encased in pastry to actually make it a proper pie, not just mince meat covered with potato! Well this was pretty much that idea, with minced lamb, small pieces of potato, a bit of carrot and onion and a minty gravy. A tried and tested flavouring of many a Shepherd’s “pie”, the flavours were very good – slightly too minty in my opinion but certainly flavoursome. However my natural reaction to eating this pie was that it just wasn’t as good having minced lamb than proper meaty chunks of lamb, which you get in the Lamb and Rosemary pie here. Also, the addition of potato to the filling naturally meant there was less capacity for meatilicious content. I applaud their effort at trying something different, but will certainly stick to the Urban Pie Lamb and Rosemary next time I visit!

Posh Pie on a Plate – The Urban Pie revolution

Lamb and Rosemary Pie Review from Urban Pie

Day two of British Pie Week 2012 saw me and a friend hit Urban Pie for a bit of a late night pie feast. And with surprisingly no queue at the pie world's answer to McDonalds, even if it was at 7:30pm in the evening, it just meant we could dig in to our meatylicious (or vegelicious, in the case of my friend’s) pies all the sooner! I went for a Lamb and Rosemary pie, which delightfully came on a plate, with a proper metal knife and fork and everything! While this may not sound like groundbreaking news or anything to make a song and dance about, it is the first time that I had experienced the box-less serving of Urban Pie stock. For up until now, they had been serving all pies in their infamous cardboard box/plate contraption (Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a box that turns into a plate... sort of!) And don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with the box plate – and you can still enjoy one if you order to take away. However it is certainly classier having a nice plate and metal cutlery combo. You certainly don’t get that in McWorld.

So onto the pie itself! The Urban Pie way is a thick short crust pastry all around the pie, which does taste good but can at times like today seem a little too thick and chewy. It does however always have delicious content and a well-filled capacity, and the tender lamb and lovely rich gravy certainly did the trick this time. The fresh herb of Rosemary also added to the flavour and made it a very enjoyable experience. Served up with some nice potato wedges, it was a lovely meal. My friend also enjoyed her seasonal vegetable pie with veg. Slightly pricey, but you have to pay for quality and certainly don’t come away disappointed having had a posh pie on a plate!

I’m dreaming of an Urban Pie this Christmas...

Christmas (Chicken) Pie Review from Urban Pie

Well you certainly know when it’s heading towards Christmas in Birmingham when the German Market rolls into town (one of the largest in Europe, I’m told) and, more importantly, the Legends at Urban Pie roll out their Christmas Pie selection! Good times!

The principle is simple. I’d like to enjoy all the Christmas trimmings of meat, potato, stuffing veg and more – but encased in pastry so that I can potentially eat my Christmas dinner on the go! Is that too much to ask for? After all, the sweet mince pie dominates the Christmas pudding market (bar Christmas puddings themselves), so why can’t a Christmas dinner pie cater for the main meal?! Great point - well made. Well done me!

So...what does the Christmas pie taste like?! Well, as you can see from the picture the stuffing lid adds a crisp layer to the top of the pie, jam-packed with meat and veg inside. While we would ideally have liked the lid of the pie to be made of pastry too, the problem with a Christmas roast dinner is that it is way too much to fit in one pie! This is the only real downside, along with the surprise inclusion of chicken – rather than the more normal Christmas favouring of Turkey – that makes up the meat content of the pie. However this aside, the pie tastes fantastic! It’s what you’d expect from the pie experts. How they pack in such meaty goodness is beyond me! The flavours work well with the pastry and the price is very reasonable. And you can now even go upmarket and have your pie on a plate – how fancy is that?!

So while others may be delving into their standard Roast Turkey Christmas dinner, why not consider a Christmas Dinner pie next year! Guaranteed to please! (And for the vegetarians out there, there is also a seasonal veggie pie alternative. And I've not even mentioned the Mince Pies! These Urban Pie-ers have got Christmas covered!)

So what are Urban Pies like?

Chicken and Ham and Steak and Mushroom Pie Reviews from Urban Pie

Last month, Pierateer RAS told us all about the great fast food bar that is Urban Pie. Two reviewers went to the Birmingham branch yesterday to grab a tasty lunch bite! It was our first time at Urban Pie, and due to all the great reviews we were expecting the best. We were not disappointed. At just under £4 for any pie, the cost of these pies is not the lowest, but for the quality and at a restaurant, the price was actually quite decent. You can choose many extras with these pies including, mash, cheese, gravy and curry sauce. Mash costs an extra £1.75 but you get such a large helping, these two reviewers shared a portion (with some yummy cheddar cheese on top!) I was a first taken aback by the large selection of pies and didn't know what to choose, but settled on a lovely chicken and ham number. My fellow reviewer choose a steak and mushroom, though he wanted plain steak they had sold out because they were so popular. While none of these reviewers are vegetarian, I was surprised at the choice one had if one was so inclined.

Urban pie So, the chicken and ham. Firstly, I was pleased that chicken was teamed up with something other than mushroom. While I will have mushroom in a pie if there is little other choice, I prefer the slimy fungus to be absent from my delicious pie. At first glance, I could tell that this pie was professional, the lovely crispy pasty was the warm golden colour you expect from a high quality pie, and it was in a great condition. These pies are all made the same, round, small but quite a deep fill giving them a large capacity. Inside, was was a good content of gravy and lots of good quality meaty chunks, making the pie slip easily down the throat (so low chewiness - which I like). This pie was good right down to the last bite - so very consistent.

Urban pie The steak and mushroom was also spectacular: great, creamy gravy with very high quality steak chunks.

Overall, Urban Pie scores very highly. While some might say the pies are on the slightly small size, with a nice large dollop of mash, this meal will fill you right up. Additionally, the pies themselves were still a little pricey for someone on a tight budget, so it might be best to visit at the end of the day to get a reduced price! Also there is that bonus of INSTANT PIE!

If ONLY there was a fast food restaurant dedicated to pies.....

It’s not hard to find a McDonalds, Burger King or KFC lining the High Street or out-of-town retail park. But let’s face it – none of them are the pie capital of Britain. And you could argue that the local chip shop never has the range of pies that you truly desire for a change, even if pukka pies do provide consistent pie quality. But what if you want a bit more class in your pie?

Well fear not guys, for the great minds behind Urban pie have spotted a niche in the market place for some top quality, but fairly reasonably priced, pies. Their motto says it all:

“At urban pie our passion is to create gourmet, handmade pies, deep filled with the finest ingredients...enjoy!”

Such a great variety of pies, including specialising at Christmas (roast dinner pie) or the mashed potato covered cottage pie – they seem to have everything covered! And with half price pies after 5pm, surely it’s gotta be a winner with the Birmingham public...and now Leicester too! Surely it won’t be long till global domination. You heard it here first!
