British Pie Week - Birmingham Pierate Pie Night
One of the pie-lights of British Pie Week as soon as we confirmed it was always going to be our first March Pierate Pie Night! We've had a number of pie nights in November as part of our Birthday Pie-rty celebrations. But being British Pie Week, we thought it rude not to throw another pie-rty and decided to rummage and pillage the pies at the Jekyll n Hyde pub in Birmingham for our Pie Night takeover!

For those who don't know, the Jekyll and Hyde pub has provided the highest rated pie in Birmingham so far, when we enjoyed a Steak Pie there back in 2013 and a number of Pierate Recommended pies since! You can read all about it in our "Best Pies in Birmingham" article.
Check out some of the tweets from the night by looking at the twitter hashtag #PieratePieNight

On the night itself, Pierateer Rob went through a bit of info on how to rate a pie on the 7 Cs of pie rating, as well as a brief update on what we've been up to recently! It included mention of the interview on BBC Radio Leeds Rob had done literally that morning, as well as some of the "pie stunts" that the Pierateers had done in previous British Pie Weeks, such as Tim's Pie-thon (Python meat pie) and Sam eating 21 pie meals and losing weight!
All in all, it was a great night and we hope to do another Pierate Pie Night there again! Thanks to everyone who came along, as well as to Manager Matt, Chef Tom and the other staff at the Jekyll and Hyde for being such great hosts and for our special £10 a head pie and wine offer! We look forward to coming back to rate more pies there again soon!

The countdown to British Pie Week continues with our most exciting announcement yet! Pierate are going to rummage and pillage the pies at the Jekyll n Hyde pub in Birmingham as we host a Pie Night takeover in British Pie Week!

| British Pie Week 2017 is from 6th to 12th March! |
And you may also recognise the upstairs Gin Parlour because that is actually the backdrop for when Pierateer Rob filmed with hit BBC show "Rip Off Britain" in February 2015!
So here's the details of the pie night and how you can sign up to come:
Kick off 5:30pm
The upstairs Gin Parlour will open at 5:30pm (though you can pick up a drink in the bar downstairs if you arrive a bit early!)

Manager Matt has put on a special offer for our Pierate Pie Night, to compliment their pie specials board and regular pies on offer. For one Monday night only, you can order 2 pies and a bottle of house wine for just £21.95! (This will become their regular Pie Night offer soon!)
Who rate all the Pies?!
While people arrive and settle in, from about 6pm we'll give you a bit of info about how to rate a pie on the 7 Cs of pie rating, as well as a brief update on what we've been up to recently!
All eyes on the Pies!
We'll keep the spiel short so that you can tuck into your pies from about 6:15 onwards, while any late comers get their order in! The Pierateers will be around to chat to and answer your pie questions as best we can!
Stay as long as you like!
We realise it's a school night, so go when you need to, but you're welcome to stay as long as you like! (Well, until just after last orders at the bar!) We'll be hanging around and there'll be a few chances to pick up a limited edition Pierate mug for just a fiver should you so wish!
This pie night is open to friends plus readers of our pie blog and entry is free - you just pay the pub for your food and drinks - but to attend you need to register by sending an email to us at pierateship@yahoo.co.uk with the names of those who are coming (as places are limited). We hope to see some of you there! |
In the meantime, you can find out more about The Pierateers or about what we've been up to in previous British Pie Weeks on the world's leading pie review blog! Plus we'll soon be posting our our British Pie Week #PiePledge article - with our full plans for British Pie Week - but for now why not watch our short video clip to find out how you can get involved in British Pie Week too?

Jekyll or Hyde? We decide!
“Jekyll and Hyde” Cock and Bull Pie Review at The Jekyll and Hyde Pub, Birmingham City Centre

| Jekyll and Hyde Pie Review |
So when Pierateers RAS and SJL met in Birmingham at the end of last year it was an obvious choice to go back and try another pie there! While it was a shame there was only one pie on the menu, it meant both Pierateers could give their opinion on the pie they tried. And being the house pie (named the “Jekyll and Hyde pie” on their menu) we were hoping for a good one!
The Jekyll and Hyde pub in Birmingham was the setting for some recent filming Pierateer RAS did with the BBC, which you’ll be able to view in March 2015. Of course we’ll let you know more when it airs! Until then, you can still see us on the BBC Sport website talking football pies!
|
The pie on the menu was a “cock and bull pie finished with shallots, mushrooms and port, served with seasonal vegetables and champ potato”. It was once again a very decent sized pie for a £8.50 meal in the centre of Birmingham and good quality for that price. However it took us a bit by surprise that it was served in a ceramic dish!
You can image our thoughts as it was brought to the table we were sitting at, seeing that ceramic dish and some puff pastry peaking over the rim. Had they changed their winning formula? Was the fully encased Jekyll changing into a top crust Hyde?!

| Jekyll and Hyde Pie Cross-section |
The pie lid was particularly flaky and light pastry, very much enjoyed, and well complemented by the tender pieces of meat within the pie and a mix of vegetables, including the shallots. The meat was nicely spread throughout the pie and while the meat pieces were quite large and thus a little chewy in places, it was generally very good. I’d perhaps recommend slightly smaller pieces of meat next time to make it a bit tenderer and mix the flavours more, but all together this was another very good pie.
While it didn’t quite reach the peaks of the Steak pie eaten last year, it is clear that pies are something the Jekyll and Hyde pub do well! It’s another top scoring pie on the 7 Cs of pie rating for Birmingham which earns Pierate Recommended status!

Would the steak pie be more Jekyll or Hyde?
Chuck Steak, Jaipur Ale and Shallot Pie Review at The Jekyll and Hyde Pub, Birmingham City Centre
There are times when it can take a good few days to think up a witty, clever or punderful play on words to include in the title of a pie review on pierate. This, of course, was not one of them! For anyone who delves into the pie reviews on the Web’s premier pie reviewing resource will know that if there’s anything we Pierateers like almost as much as our pies, it’s a good play on words. So the following paragraph just writes itself, to be honest.
I guess the very reason you’re reading this review is determine whether the steak pie I ate at the pub is more Jekyll or Hyde in nature. For, as we all know, there can be some strange cases of things being called pies but which are clearly not pies, or have a split personality of looking great on the menu but rather disappointing on the plate. However the attraction of a “World of Ï€” section on the menu was very appealing and gave me strong hope for a winning formula to my pie selection. Had they found the right potion? Well there was nowhere for this pie to Hyde when it came to being reviewed by the Pierateers. I went for the Cheeky Pie – Chuck steak, Jaipur Ale and shallot.
So first impressions were very good. The pie came out very well presented, was fully encased in a golden and crisp pastry and was a reasonably sized pie for a £8.50 meal in the centre of Birmingham. The pie crust was flaky and light pastry, well complemented by the tender steak pieces within the pie and a mix of vegetables, including the shallots. The meat was nicely spread throughout the pie and while there could have perhaps been a slightly stronger taste to the gravy (it was not immediately obvious what ale was included), that did not detract from the fact that the Jaipur ale complemented the pie filling wonderfully. While I would have hoped for a slightly deeper pie with a bit more steak, I can’t deny that what I ate was one of the best pies I have had. The pastry was crisp and not too thick, the steak lovely and tender and the filling complemented the pastry delightfully. On the occasion of Kavita’s leaving do, and a lovely night out, there was certainly nothing strange about this pie and it left me feeling more Jekyll than Hyde (though come to think of it, I could murder another pie...)
