Birmingham Pie Night Announced for 12th Anniversary

It wouldn't be right to not celebrate our Pierate anniversary with a pie party and, while last year's had to be limited to just Pierateer Rob and his support bubble (which was still a decent sized pie-rty due to all the Senior kids!), this year we are back in a pie shop and ready to celebrate the only way we know how: eating and rating pie!!

Pierateer Rob visiting Pieminister Birmingham
Pierateer Rob visiting Pieminister Birmingham
So on 11th November, Pierate are going to rummage and pillage the pies at Pieminister Birmingham once again as we host a Pierateer Takeover for our 12th anniversary - just like we have done in the past during British Pie Weeks such as British Pie Week 2018!

Being held from 7pm on Thursday 11th November, the night will be a chance for friends of the Pierateers to catch up on what's been going down on the Pierate Ship, and most importantly to eat and rate some delicious pies! It's sure to be a great way to celebrate 12 years of pie rating!

Pieminister Birmingham at 16 Waterloo Street
For those who don't know, Bristol pie giant Pieminister opened up a shop in Birmingham city centre in mid-2017 and we've frequented it a number of times already. However we certainly hadn't waited until they opened a shop in Birmingham before rating one of their pies, for we have rated 19 Pieminister pies in total and one of our very first reviews over 10 years ago was from Pieminister!

Since then we've tried some of their "Pie Election" winners (when pie fans got to choose which old favourites to bring back to the menu for British Pie Week 2015) and we were even crazy enough to try their Cricket pie in 2017! Yes, that's right - it had actual whole insects in it!!

So here's the details of the pie night and how you can get involved:

Kick off 7pm
Delicious pies on offer at Pieminister - we've rated 19!
We'll be arriving at the Pieminister Birmingham shop for 7pm, where we'll have some dedicated Pierateer Takeover tables set aside for us! (We advise you book up to avoid disappointment!)

Pick your pie!
There are a whole host of pies to choose from on their menu.

Who rate all the Pies?!
During the two hours Pierateer Rob will be around to chat pies, give you a bit of info about how to rate a pie on the 7 Cs of pie rating, as well as a brief update on what we've been up to over the years! And if he can, he'll try to answer your pie-related questions (like when is a pie not a pie?!) Just look out for him in his black Pierate t-shirt and don't be afraid to come up and say hi if we haven't met yet!

This pie night is open to friends plus readers of our pie blog and entry is free - you just pay the pie shop for your food and drinks as normal - but to attend we advise you ring and book into the Pieminister Birmingham Store on 0121 285 3743 (as places in the restaurant are limited).

We hope to see some of you there!

Pierate's Birmingham Pie Night for Charity 2019

We're now just a couple of weeks away from our blog's tenth birthday (which we've named International Pierate Day), and with that in mind we have some very exciting news to share:

Some tickets are still available for our Birmingham Pie Party with a "star baker" and top rated pies on 16th Nov!

Pierate Pie Night

The motley crew from our Pie Contest 2013
Yes, on Saturday 16th November from 5:30-7:30pm we'll be welcoming Great British Bake Off Series 6 star Sandy Docherty and the pies from our number 1 pie maker (out of over 625 pies rated on our blog) - MyPie!

Sandy, for those who don't follow GBBO (or whose memory is a little hazy!), was the contestant who referred to her home baking in episode one with words to the effect of "everything I bake at home seems to turn into a pie!" And for some reason, that seemed to really strike a cord with us on the Pierate Ship!!!

Sandy and the Pierateers
Sandy and the Pierateers!
No surprise then that Sandy immediately became our favourite of that series, despite some real competition from man of many homemade cooking aids Ian, the king of the jungle Paul and series winner Nadiya (who you may remember had the privilege of then cooking the Queen's birthday cake!) You can reminisce on all the bakers from Series 6 here in their pre-show BBC Bios or read up on Series 6 on Wikipedia!

Back to Sandy and she said back in her pre-show bio that "she bakes to show her family, friends and colleagues that she cares about them" - which is a great outlook on baking and we look forward to her bringing some of her baking magic with her when she brings some pies to our pie party for our charity raffle and chats a bit about life in the tent and what she's up to these days. We were gutted that Sandy was eliminated before the week when the bakers all had to make a game pie, but can't wait to try her pies for real - not just drool over our TV screens!

Just take a look at some of the pie pictures Sandy has tweeted in the past:

Of course us Pierateers are no stranger to the Great British Bake Off either, as our first TV appearance came on The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice when we made a Crocodile Pie rated by none other than celebrity chef Michel Roux Jnr!

So while we had a break last year, we're delighted to once again be following the tradition of 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2017 in having a Pierate Birthday Pie-rty with friends and colleagues in just a few weeks time! For those wondering what it will be like, here's our review from our 8th Birthday Pie-rty two years ago, which Sandy also attended.

Pie maker Chris with Pierateers Sam, Tim and Rob
And as if it couldn't get any more exciting, we're delighted that the pies will be provided by none other than Pierate Highly Recommended pie maker - and current number 1 in our Pie Rankings - Chris Brumby of MyPie.

Yes, like in 2017, we've once again gone straight to the top of the Pie Rankings to find a Pierate Highly Recommended pie maker to supply the pies at our tenth Birthday Pie Party, with Chris' Steak and Ale Pie our current number 1 at 6.61/7! And we'll have a top vegetarian pie option too from Chris, who has recently celebrated 5 years of his MyPie business and has spent most of those 5 years at the top of our pie rankings!

Plus our charity for the night will once again be Action Against Hunger, who we supported with over £300 raised at our Charity pie night in 2017!

We've still got a few tickets available, so to enquire about ticket availability to book your place at our Birmingham Pie Night in South Birmingham, please email pierateship@yahoo.co.uk with your order (Steak and Ale or Vegetarian pie). Your £6 ticket, paid on the door, will cover your MyPie, mash and veg, plus a selection of homemade fruit pies people bring along. And if you bring a homemade pie with you - which will be judged by our star baker and the Pierateers - you will get a £2.00 discount on your ticket! Let us know if you're planning to bring a homemade pudding pie when you enquire about your ticket!

As you can imagine, we can't wait for our next Pie Party on Saturday 16th November and we hope to see some of you there!!

Pierate Pie Night 2017

Pierate Pie Night raises some "dough" for Charity!

Sandy and the Pierateers
Sandy and the Pierateers!
It's only right that we celebrated our 8th Birthday in style - with what else but a pie night! And while there were a few last minute hitches - not most the oven in the hall we were going to be using being written off! - we were able to still go ahead with the night by hosting it at the home of one of the Pierateers! It was a delight to see 36 pie fans (including Pierateers Rob, Sam and Tim) enjoy pie and mash alongside one of the stars of Great British Bake Off 2015, Sandy Docherty! All in all, I think everyone had a great evening and the lid on the pie, so to speak, was raising a whopping £358 for charity Action Against Hunger.

We'd like to say a massive thank you to all those who came to our Birmingham Pie Night and particularly our star guest Sandy Docherty for coming down and to Chris from MyPie London, who generously donated the pies so that we could raise more money for charity. The guests loved them and could see why the Steak and Ale pie is number 1 out of over 625 pies in our pie rankings!

We were delighted to be able to enjoy pies that Chris from MyPie London sent us for our Charity Pie Night! Now our number 1 pie maker on Pierate, taking the top spot since our 6th birthday, Chris holds the number 1 and number 2 spots in our pie rankings!

His Steak and Ale pie scoring 6.61/7 has beaten off the com-pie-tition of over 600 other pies to top our pie rankings!

Our apple and blackcurrant pie!
Sandy was a great guest, sharing some of her tips at the start of the evening and even helping us peel the potatoes beforehand. She kindly brought two homemade pies with her to be raffle prizes. We also were gifted a few Pieminister vouchers for their new(ish) Birmingham pie shop for our raffle and someone even went away with their very own Pierate mug! We were also grateful to Ruth and Sarah for bringing a number of homemade pies for our dessert, alongside our own attempt at an apple and blackcurrant pie.

It was a great evening, sharing a bit about what we'd been up to, watching our Leeds Pie Tour video and hearing a bit about the work of charity Action Against Hunger. But as they say, a picture speaks a thousand words, so here are some of the pielights of our pie night in photo form:

GBBO Star & Top Pies To Headline Pie Party - Friday Pieday - 12th May 2017

It's Friday! It's Pieday!

It's fair to say that we don't post Pieday Friday articles as often as we once did, but every now and again there is some pie news that is far too exciting to keep to ourselves! And with today marking our seven and a half year anniversary, meaning it is just six months until our eighth birthday (named International Pierate Day) we have some very exciting news to share:

Big Pie Party planned with a "star baker" and top rated pies!

The motley crew from our Pie Contest 2013
Sometimes you've got to plan early if you want the biggest names and the tastiest pies at your birthday pierty! Yes, it may sound uber keen planning six months in advance for our 11th November pie party, but when you've got a star baker coming you want to shout about it!

For the last few years we've been in contact over Twitter with GBBO Series 6 star Sandy Docherty about coming to one of our pie nights, and at last we've got a date in the diary! Sandy, for those who don't follow the show (or whose memory is a little hazy!), was the contestant who referred to her home baking in episode one with words to the effect of "everything I bake at home seems to turn into a pie!" And for some reason, that seemed to really strike a cord with us on the Pierate Ship!!!

MyPie pies at the 2015 Pie-rty

You can reminisce on all the bakers from Series 6 here in their pre-show BBC Bios or read up on Series 6 on Wikipedia!

For those wondering what it will be like, here's our review from our 5th Birthday Pie-rty three years ago.

Yes, like in 2015, we've once again gone straight to the top of the Pie Rankings to find a Pierate Highly Recommended pie maker to supply the pies at our eighth Birthday Pie Party, with Chris' Free Range Chicken, Smoked Ham and Tarragon Pie rating at 6.39/7, his Venison, Chilli and Cheese Pie rating at 6.57/7 and his Steak and Ale Pie our current number 1 at 6.61/7! All three are in our top 10 out of almost 600 pies reviewed!

And what's more, Chris has kindly agreed to donate the pies to us for a charitable donation, so when tickets become available the majority of the ticket cost will be split between two charities Chris will be selecting. Even better! Ticket information will be released on www.pierate.co.uk nearer the event.

As you can imagine, we can't wait til Saturday November 11th for what promises to be our best pie party yet!!!

Piebury Corner are close to opening their new London Store
I couldn't be much more excited about this news unless Piebury Corner announced they were opening a store in my hometown of Birmingham! Having been huge fans of Piebury Corner since our first review there in February 2013, they have been churning out Pierate Recommended pie after Pierate Recommended pie - many of which are Pierate Highly Recommended and two of which make our top 5 pies out of 600!

Check out all our Piebury Corner pie reviews in anticipation!

Pieminister soon to open in Birmingham City Centre

It's not just Piebury Corner opening up a new store soon! The wait is finally over and the premier pie chain Pieminister is about to open its first store in Birmingham! We can't wait to be VIPs (Very Important Pie-eaters) on Thursday night, when we get to sample their pies in their newest branch.

And to countdown to then, why not read our last review from Pieminister - their British Pie Week special of "Cricket Pie"! You can also see their Leeds store featured in our Leeds Pie Tour video:

Pies at the Pierate Party!

The pies of the www.pierate.co.uk 5th Birthday pie-rty!

We were absolutely delighted to be able to celebrate less than two weeks after International Pierate Day 2014 with almost 60 guests, who had the chance to enjoy traditional London Pie and Mash for dinner and then rate some delicious home made dessert pies, at our 5th Birthday Pie-rty held in Birmingham. So what were all these lovely pies?

You can read about the pie party itself - as opposed to just about the pies that were eaten and rated there - in our "Pierate's 5th Birthday Pie-rty" article!

Following in the footsteps of our Pierate Pie Contest 2013, guests had the chance to bring their own pie creations – this time for dessert – with a wide range of pies (and a few “pies”) brought along and thoroughly enjoyed! There was a great selection of dessert pies provided, ranging from the traditional apple and fruit pies to chocolate and cherry and one containing three snickers bars! Naturally the guests were told about the 7 Cs of pie rating and able to give the pies they tried a pie rating!

Home made Pie Party Review
The home made pies of the Pierate Birthday Pie-rty!
Thanks once again to all those who brought a home made pie along with them. It was a great selection and people thoroughly enjoyed them!

The Pierateers also got in on the act, making a fruit pie for dessert. The apple pie Pierateer RAS made was significantly less exotic than the crocodile pie he made a few months ago, which went on to star in the Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice pie episode in which it was rated by none other than Michelin star winning TV chef Michel Roux Jr! However his fruit pie proved popular with the guests and other friends who tried it.

Caroline Artiss Apple Pie Review
Rob used the apple pie recipe by Youtube Chef Caroline Mili Artiss - who has her own Youtube Channel sharing lots of top recipes. This particular recipe can be found on the "indi" website which showcased this apple pie alongside some other goods from this time of year in a competition a few weeks ago. Though let's face it - what could possibly beat a good old apple pie?!

While it didn't quite bake evenly, I think I did the pie justice and the  additional pastry pie, knife and fork logo is reasonably clear on the top! A very nice, sweet apple pie which has a firm but crumbly crust was very tasty and strong enough to be able to pick up in your hand. And not a soggy bottom in sight - exactly what a Pierateer expects from their pie! I would definitely recommend you watch the video and give this apple pie a go. Great job Caroline!

Pierate Pie Party Guests

And let's not forget the savoury pies we were treated to at the party...

Dinner by The London Pie and Mash Company
The Pierateers had organised for dinner to be provided by The London Pie and Mash Company, a relatively new company who are able to cater for parties, festivals and other events. They served up, unsurprisingly, traditional London pie and mash – the name really does give it away! These minced beef pies, mash potato and liquor went down really well with the party guests, and many people enjoyed trying the vinegar and liquor with their pie for the first time. The vegetarian pies were filled with seasonal vegetables and got very good comments from those who tried one too.

Paul's Pies Pie Review
Paul's Pies as pie-rizes!
And if you think the pies look familiar, that’s because The London Pie and Mash Company use the authentic London pies made in London by Eel House Ltd pies – who we have already rated as “Pierate Recommended” with a great 5.73/7! (Click on the link and you can find out how to order some Eel House Ltd pies yourself!)

We also can't forget to mention the delicious Paul's Pies we were donated as the pie-rizes for those who had baked a homemade pie, who got to take home one of Paul’s Highly Rated Pies with them as a big thank you! Thanks to Paul’s Pies for providing a big box of their delicious pies!

Pierate’s 5th Birthday Pie-rty

Celebrating 5 years of www.pierate.co.uk with our second pie party/contest!

Pierate Pie Party Guests

We’ve been talking about it for weeks, but on Saturday 22nd November we completed our ‘Month of birthday surPIEses’ – in celebration of 5 years since www.pierate.co.uk began! Having celebrated International Pierate Day 2014 less than two weeks ago, we gave almost 60 guests the chance to rate some pies at our 5th Birthday Pie-rty, held in Birmingham.

Pierate Pie Party Guests
The party kicked off with a big welcome to the many guests who attended as people dropped off their homemade pies and got ready for a fun evening of pie eating and rating. Pierateer RAS kicked off proceedings with a brief “pie-light reel” of some of the exciting developments that have happened aboard the Pierate Ship over the past five years – in particular our various radio and television appearances in the last twelve months and judging at the British Pie Awards 2014.

Dinner by The London Pie and Mash Company
This was swiftly followed by dinner time! You’ll be pleased to know that dinner and dessert pie eating took up the two largest chunks of time in the “pie chart” produced for the evening!

Pierate Pie Party Homemade Pies
The brilliant homemade pies!
The London Pie and Mash Company did a great job of catering for the 60 guests, taking over the hall’s kitchen and providing hot pie and mash for the guests. I’d wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone else organising a pie party or event.

You can read about and see more pictures of the pies that were eaten and rated at our 5th Birthday Pie-rty in our "Pies at the Pierate Party" article!

Paul's Pies Pie Review
Paul's Pies as pie-rizes!

All in all the pie party flew by and with a quick game of pass the piecel to end the night on, featuring some delicious Paul's Pies as the pie-rizes, everyone went home happy (particularly those who had baked a homemade pie, who got to take home one of Paul’s Highly Rated Pies with them as a big thank you!) Thanks to Paul’s Pies for providing a big box of their delicious pies for pie-rizes!

Pierateer RAS had this to say at the end of the night: "Many thanks to all those who helped in setting up and setting down the venue - I couldn't have done it without you! - and those who brought pies along. It was a pietastic evening of fun with friends and family! While there was unfortunately not time to work out whose homemade pie won in the end, I think we can all safely say that ‘everyone was a winner’ after an evening of fabulous pies from The London Pie and Mash Company and our home bakers!"

Here’s to many more fun pie nights ahead!
