International Pierate Day 2024

We Pierateers of pie review website www.pierate.co.uk are today celebrating our 15th Birthday, and we'd love you to join us by simply eating a pie and rating it!

That’s why we’ve designated
12th November as International Pierate Day!

The Pierate Pie made especially for us by Nice Pie!
It follows in the footsteps of the very first International Pierate Day in 2013, which has been celebrated on 12th November every year since! But we don’t want you – pie lovers worldwide – to just sit at home and watch as we eat all the pies! Oh no! Pie eating and pie rating is something we can all enjoy. Something that can bring friends, family and communities together. Pies are celebrated and eaten in so many countries worldwide and so today – marking our fifteenth birthday – we would love you to join us in eating and rating pies this week to celebrate!

Maybe you'll want to use the illustrated guide below on how to rate a pie, based on our 7 Cs of pie rating, which we commissioned fellow food blogger and amazing illustrator Emily from www.recipesandreviews.co.uk to create for us for our 6th birthday!

An illustrated guide on how to rate a pie by @emily_etc

So here’s the deal... in six simple words: Eat a pie and rate it!

It doesn’t matter whether it’s savoury or sweet, or whether you prefer your pies without the wheat or meat! We really do rate anything and everything that is a true pie and sometimes a number of interesting things that try to be pies too! But the important thing is we love to eat pie and rate it – for we are, after all, the Pierateers!

So once you’ve found a pie to eat – whether in the local bakery, butchers, supermarket or your favourite pie shop or one you have made in the luxury of your own home – why not rate your pie using the Seven Cs of pie rating in our lovely illustrated guide above?

So what do you need to do now?

Well, first things first - you need a pie (or two!) For insPIEration you might find our Pie Rankings helpful, with over 650 pies we've rated and reviewed over the past 14 years! Or perhaps you want to make one of the pies our Ship's Cook has made, following her reci-pies here.

Most of all, we hope you enjoy eating and rating pies today, this week and for the year to come! Hap-pie Birthday to Pierate!!

International Pierate Day 2021

We Pierateers of pie review website www.pierate.co.uk are today celebrating our 12th Birthday, and we'd love you to join us by simply eating a pie and rating it!

That’s why we’ve designated

Something that can bring friends, family and communities together. Pies are celebrated and eaten in so many countries worldwide and so today – marking our twelfth birthday – we would love you to join us in eating and rating pies this week to celebrate!

Sadly of course, as with so many events in 2020, covid restrictions meant we could not gather together to eat pie in celebration with 50 friends last year like we did when celebrating our tenth birthday. And this year's celebrations have been scaled back a bit. But Pierateer Rob and 9 friends enjoyed a pie meal out at Pieminster last night to celebrate the anniversary and looks forward to more pie adventures this weekend. And of course we can still use the illustrated guide below on how to rate a pie, based on our 7 Cs of pie rating, which we commissioned fellow food blogger and amazing illustrator Emily from www.recipesandreviews.co.uk to create for us for our 6th birthday!

Birmingham Pie Night Announced for 12th Anniversary

It wouldn't be right to not celebrate our Pierate anniversary with a pie party and, while last year's had to be limited to just Pierateer Rob and his support bubble (which was still a decent sized pie-rty due to all the Senior kids!), this year we are back in a pie shop and ready to celebrate the only way we know how: eating and rating pie!!

Pierateer Rob visiting Pieminister Birmingham
Pierateer Rob visiting Pieminister Birmingham
So on 11th November, Pierate are going to rummage and pillage the pies at Pieminister Birmingham once again as we host a Pierateer Takeover for our 12th anniversary - just like we have done in the past during British Pie Weeks such as British Pie Week 2018!

Being held from 7pm on Thursday 11th November, the night will be a chance for friends of the Pierateers to catch up on what's been going down on the Pierate Ship, and most importantly to eat and rate some delicious pies! It's sure to be a great way to celebrate 12 years of pie rating!

Pieminister Birmingham at 16 Waterloo Street
For those who don't know, Bristol pie giant Pieminister opened up a shop in Birmingham city centre in mid-2017 and we've frequented it a number of times already. However we certainly hadn't waited until they opened a shop in Birmingham before rating one of their pies, for we have rated 19 Pieminister pies in total and one of our very first reviews over 10 years ago was from Pieminister!

Since then we've tried some of their "Pie Election" winners (when pie fans got to choose which old favourites to bring back to the menu for British Pie Week 2015) and we were even crazy enough to try their Cricket pie in 2017! Yes, that's right - it had actual whole insects in it!!

So here's the details of the pie night and how you can get involved:

Kick off 7pm
Delicious pies on offer at Pieminister - we've rated 19!
We'll be arriving at the Pieminister Birmingham shop for 7pm, where we'll have some dedicated Pierateer Takeover tables set aside for us! (We advise you book up to avoid disappointment!)

Pick your pie!
There are a whole host of pies to choose from on their menu.

Who rate all the Pies?!
During the two hours Pierateer Rob will be around to chat pies, give you a bit of info about how to rate a pie on the 7 Cs of pie rating, as well as a brief update on what we've been up to over the years! And if he can, he'll try to answer your pie-related questions (like when is a pie not a pie?!) Just look out for him in his black Pierate t-shirt and don't be afraid to come up and say hi if we haven't met yet!

This pie night is open to friends plus readers of our pie blog and entry is free - you just pay the pie shop for your food and drinks as normal - but to attend we advise you ring and book into the Pieminister Birmingham Store on 0121 285 3743 (as places in the restaurant are limited).

We hope to see some of you there!

International Pierate Day 2020

We Pierateers of pie review website www.pierate.co.uk are today celebrating our 11th Birthday, and we'd love you to join us by simply eating a pie and rating it!

Sadly of course, as with so many events in 2020, covid restrictions mean we cannot gather together to eat pie in celebration with 50 friends like we did last year when celebrating our tenth birthday. Instead things we will be a bit quieter this time around, as we celebrate another year of pie rating in our individual houses with a classic box of Mr Kipling pies, amongst others. But we can still use the illustrated guide below on how to rate a pie, based on our 7 Cs of pie rating, which we commissioned fellow food blogger and amazing illustrator Emily from www.recipesandreviews.co.uk to create for us for our 6th birthday!

This weekend we will be celebrating our tenth birthday in style, eating our number one rated pie with around 50 guests! Yes, where else could we go for a top birthday-celebrating pie than the Steak and Ale pie from the one and only MyPie London, who have been our number 1 ranked pie for most of their five years in business! We'll be using the illustrated guide below on how to rate a pie, based on our 7 Cs of pie rating, which we commissioned fellow food blogger and amazing illustrator Emily from www.recipesandreviews.co.uk to create for us for our 6th birthday!

We very much enjoyed eating and rating the British Pie Awards 2018 winning Steak and Ale Pie from Turner's Pies at our annual birthday pie-rty last year!

This time round on Saturday we are looking forward to once again enjoying our number 1 pie out of over 650 when we enjoy the Steak and Ale pie from MyPie London!

Our ninth birthday pie from Turner's Pies!
It follows in the footsteps of the very first International Pierate Day in 2013, which has been celebrated on 12th November every year since! Pies are celebrated and eaten in so many countries worldwide and so today – marking our ninth birthday – we would love you to join us in eating and rating pies this week to celebrate!

This year our main highlight was the birthday pie night we had, to celebrate with a number of friends of the blog, where we finally got to pie rate the British Pie Awards 2018 winners Turner's Pies! We rated their Steak and Ale pie recently, which was the pie that won the British Pie Awards this year, and will be writing up our reviews of some of their other pie flavours soon!

Our pie eating friends enjoyed using the illustrated guide below on how to rate a pie, based on our 7 Cs of pie rating, which we commissioned fellow food blogger and amazing illustrator Emily from www.recipesandreviews.co.uk to create for us for our 6th birthday! And in a slightly surreal moment, people spontaneously started singing hap-pie birthday to our pie blog when they saw the pie with the "9" candle in (pictured above!) Possibly the first time anyone has ever sung happy birthday to a pie blog before!!

Pie Birthday Card
Quite an apt pie card to celebrate our Birthday!

This year our main highlight was the charity pie night we held last night, which saw over 35 people enjoy pies from MyPie alongside our celebrity guest, 2015 Bake Off contestant Sandy! We managed to raise a great total of £358.00 for charity Action Against Hunger and there were many happy pie fans there too! We'll do a proper write up soon!

Last year we got a lovely pie-related Birthday card to celebrate our 7th year (above), and you may also remember that to celebrate the occasion of our 6th birthday, we commissioned fellow food blogger and amazing illustrator Emily from www.recipesandreviews.co.uk to create us this lovely, personalised print - an illustrated guide on how to rate a pie, based on our 7 Cs of pie rating!

International Pierate Day 2014 - Mince Pie with every meal

Of course you won't need us to tell you we were going to be eating and rating pies on International Pierate Day 2014! That's a given. But it's not like us to do some sort of silly pie-blicity stunt just to get your attention... wait, okay... so maybe we occasionally do! But Python Pie, Crocodile Pie and eating 21 pie meals in 7 days (and losing weight while doing so!) aside, we hardly make a fuss about the 425+ pies we've rated so far. So for our birthday, we thought we'd try and solve a mystery:

Just why do shops sell mince pies before December?

Pierate Pierateer Print Michlan
Our birthday print by @michlan
In order to answer this question, and quite frankly a great excuse to do Piethagoras' Theorem on International Pierate Day 2014, Pierateer RAS has decided to try "Mince Pie with every meal" - an attempt to solve why mince pies are sold before December!

Breakfast

I'm not going to lie - a mince pie for breakfast is at times almost a common feature of my diet, rather than an abnormality or chore of any kind. Especially last November/December time, when I ended up eating tens of mince pies in order to create our "12 Pies of Christmas" music video! The mince pie of choice for the day is Booths Mince Pies - sold in the Northern supermarket chain and purchased on a recent trip up to Morecambe to film with the BBC.

Booths Mince Pie Review
Supplementing my usual breakfast banana, the pie slipped down well, providing a bit of a sugary, pastry boost to the morning. Well needed when I woke up tired after staying up late to write our Birthday post last night!

The pastry wasn't overly crisp and the wonky lids didn't create the nicest condition possible, but the pie filling was quite nice and fruity. I'd certainly prefer a less shallow pie than this, as the pastry rather dominated the flavour of the pie. But the pie was good and I'm just limbering up for my lunchtime mince pie...

Lunch

Booths Mince Pie Review
Lunch involved a trip to the work canteen and the main meal for the day was Lamb Tagine. I have to admit, seeing the stew like option there on display the first thing that went through my head was “Why don’t they wrap that in pastry – with clearly defined base, sides and lid naturally – and sell it as a pie?!”

Anyway, the meal was nice, but the main thing was the mince pie I had with it, which again I couldn’t help think was a little too shallow and the fruit mix in it wasn’t quite as nice. There were a few crunchy bits in the mince mix within this pie which I didn’t particularly enjoy. However all in all, the pie was again a reasonable standard.

Dinner

Booths Mince Pie Review
Having got home from work and with packing to do for my holiday the next day, I needed something quick and easy to cook. Admittedly I could have easily used this as an excuse to go to the local takeaway and get a Pukka Pie and chips (believe me, I don’t normally need an excuse for a pie!) but having a mince pie ready and waiting for dessert, I decided to stick with my original plan of chicken kiev.

As I’d already had two of these mince pies “au naturel” I decided to have this third one of the day with a bit of ice cream, which did mix it up a bit. However by this point I had definitely decided that this wasn’t my favourite mince pie to eat. The pastry wasn’t overly crisp and there could have been more filling to balance the pastry:filing ratio better but overall it was a nice, if not spectacular mince pie. At £1.19 for 4 pies, so 30p each, this was a fair bit more expensive than the Lidl/Tesco/Mr Kipling comparisons of last year but not too badly priced.

And as for why mince pies get sold before December? Well, I think there are a few reasons. Firstly, why would you ever only want to eat pies in December?! Surely more places should follow the lead of Robinsons Bakery and sell mince pies all year round! Secondly, with so many to choose from, you need to start early in order to sample a good range of mince pies in order to choose your favourite for Christmas Day!

But finally - and arguably most importantly – you wouldn’t be able to eat and rate mince pies on International Pierate Day if they weren’t sold until December. And we certainly wouldn’t want that to happen!!!

International Pierate Day 2013

Pie Review website www.pierate.co.uk celebrate their 4th Birthday!

Today is a day to celebrate and a day to just... well... rate! For today www.pierate.co.uk is four years old and what better way to celebrate than to eat a pie and rate it!

But we don’t want you – pie lovers worldwide – to just sit at home and watch as we eat all the pies! Oh no! Pie eating and pie rating is something we can all enjoy. Something that can bring friends, family and communities together. Pies are celebrated and eaten is so many countries worldwide and today – on our fourth birthday – we would love you to join us in eating and rating pies with us! That’s why we’ve designated 12th November as International Pierate Day!

So here’s the deal... in six simple words: Eat a pie and rate it!

It doesn’t matter whether it’s savoury or sweet, or whether you prefer your pies without the wheat or meat! We really do rate anything and everything that is a true pie and sometimes a number of interesting things that try to be pies to! But the important thing is we love to eat pie and rate it – for we are, after all, the Pierateers!

So once you’ve found a pie to eat – whether in the local bakery, supermarket or your favourite pie shop or one you have made in the luxury of your own home – why not rate your pie using our seven Cs (or if you wish, make up your own rating system!)

Our seven Cs (that we sail as Pierateers) are:

1. Colour
2. Consistency
3. Capacity
4. Chewiness
5. Cheapness
6. Content
7. Condition

You can also click here to read more detail about the Seven Cs, for those who want to take their pie rating a bit more seriously! Of course, you may find you rate a pie that needs to walk the plank, but we really hope you’ll find one that makes you squawk like a parrot to tell everyone about the amazing pie you’ve had! Either way, we hope you have fun eating and rating pie, wherever in the world you are!

And just to ins-pie-re you a little more, here are the places in the world where we’ve eaten pies, which make rating pies a truly international o-pie-tunity:

It does not provide a representative sample of the full range and quality of pies in each country but we hope one day to add to this list!

And there’s another reason why we’ve designated today International Pierate Day: It’s because pies are loved all over the world, as our readership map below shows, with the top 10 countries so far by pageviews being the UK, United States, China, Germany, France, Australia, Russia, Ukraine, Canada and Netherlands. Thanks to every single one of our pie fans out there and we hope you enjoy our many future adventures, as we set sail on the Pierate Ship to discover more exciting pies and to rate them according to the seven Cs!

And if you’re excited about pie rating, some things we have lined up for the next few months include Pierateer SJL judging at the Scotch Pie Club Awards, trying out pie flavoured dog treats from @TopCollar, possibly being referenced in a local community pantomime production of Captain Hook’s Revenge via @Woodies12 (oh yes we are!) and the release of our Christmas Pies video in mid-December entitled “12 Pies of Christmas”. Of course, you’ll find all the latest pie news on twitter @pierateers and on our blog at www.pierate.co.uk!

Whatever you do, we hope you have a great day eating and rating pies!

Yours in pie,

The Pierateers
