Voakes Free From Pie Reviews

Voakes Free From Pork Pie Reviews

We came across the company Voakes during last year's #LeedsPieTour. Whilst not actually from Leeds itself, Voakes produced a proper Yorkshire pork pie and they narrowly beat the local boys Wilson's in producing the top pork pie of the #LeedsPieTour. Having already enjoyed the gluten version of the pie, we were excited by the prospect of getting our hands on the Voakes Gluten Free range for our coeliac reviewer, Pierateer ALE. They have a great choice of pies available for delivery from the Voakes Free From website with most of them also being dairy free (with some egg free vegan options). We were delighted to be sent a whole box of pies, including pies which were best eaten hot but with their reputation for pork pies we asled Pierateer ALE to review these first. All were eaten cold but of course, if you are from more Northern climes you might need to warm them up a tad.

See below the reviews from Pierateer ALE, interestingly the free from pork pie scored almost exactly the same as the gluten version we reviewed last year.

Pork Pie (Voakes)
5.57 out of 7 (Pierate Recommended)

voakes free from pork pie

Condition - 5 out of 7 - I was really impressed with how good all of these pies looked. Given that Gluten Free pastry can be so crumbly these pies did well to survive travel in the post. This pork pie was a little bit broken but none of the others were. Despite being free from gluten and dairy, this pie looked pleasingly 'normal'. In fact it had a classic pie shape with a satisfying crimp around the edge and a vent hole. From the outside you might not realise it was a pork pie as it looked like regular pastry rather than the hot water crust pastry you often get with a pork pie.
Colour - 6 out of 7 - For a gluten free pie I thought this looked really appealing. There was some glaze to the pastry although the colour was paler than many other pies.

Cheapness - 6 out of 7 - This was the smallest 'individual' sized pie priced at £2.10 each. When you consider the premium that you often have to pay for free from products, this is excellent value. You can pay more than this for an up market regular pork pie!
Capacity - 6 out of 7 - Most of the pie was filled with meat, there wasn't a lot of jelly but this suited me. There was hardly any air gap.
Chewiness - 6 out of 7 - Compared to your average pork pie this had a great texture. Rather than being in one lump of ham, the filling had more granularity and bite. It tasted like pieces of gammon rather than ham. There were some small pieces which were perhaps a bit too chewy but you do expect a bit of fat with a pork pie. Sometime a pork pie can feel dense but this one didn't. I felt I could slightly tell that from the texture of the pastry that it was free from because it was a bit more crumbly but it was pretty amazing considering it had no gluten OR dairy.

Content - 5 out of 7 - The flavours were subtle and what you would expect from a pork pie. But it was seasoned enough to keep it interesting and it was nice that it wasn't too salty like some pork pies with less good quality meat can be.
Consistency - 5 out of 7 - Whilst it was an excellent pork pie, it was somewhat overshadowed by the other excellent versions which had more variety to the filling!

Pork & Black Pudding (Voakes)
6.07 out of 7 (Pierate Highly Recommended)

voakes free from black pudding pie

Condition - 5 out of 7 - This pie was similar in appearance to the pork pie and so scores equally highly.
Colour - 6 out of 7
Cheapness - 6 out of 7 - This pie was the bigger 'large' size which retails at £5.80. It was enough for two people to share with lunch and again represented excellent value for a free from pie of this quality. It is worth noting that this was a pie that Pierateer SJL could eat in one go so it depends on your appetite!
Capacity - 6 out of 7 - Another pie crammed with filling.
Chewiness - 6.5 out of 7 - This pie was anything but chewy, as you would expect, the black pudding was soft and made the whole thing wonderfully moist. It slipped down really well.
Content - 6.5 out of 7 - Wow, the tangy flavour from the black pudding really made this pie stand out. It is not the kind of thing you can normally get hold of as a free from product so this was a nice treat. The mixed up nature of the pieces of pork and black pudding kept the pie interesting from beginning to end. The flavours seem to have seeped into the pastry too, giving this pie an extra edge.
Consistency - 6.5 out of 7 - I would say that the pastry and filling of this pie were friends, happy to be in each other's company which made for a brilliant final product.

Pork & Chili (Voakes)
6.01 out of 7 (Pierate Highly Recommended)

voakes free from chili pork

Condition - 4.7 out of 7 - Whilst it again looks good enough to get my tastebuds going, it loses out slightly on condition compared to the other two because of the jelly boiling out on top.
Colour - 6 out of 7
Cheapness - 6 out of 7 - Another up-market large pie for £5.80.
Capacity - 6 out of 7 - Again this pie was well filled, perhaps too well filled because the jelly boiled out!
Chewiness - 6.5 out of 7 - The texture was like the pork pie but perhaps a bit more moist due to the chili.
Content - 6.5 out of 7 - The chili added plenty of flavour and made the normal pork version look a bit boring. There was a sweetness to the chili and it wasn't very spicy but full of flavour. For me it wasn't quite as good as the black pudding version but I would choose this over the pork any day.
Consistency - 6.4 out of 7 - The flavours of this pie worked really well. The chili flavour permeated through the whole pie so it didn't have to rely on an intense pork and salt flavour like many pork pies do.

Overall these were excellent gluten free pies, in fact I would go as far as to say these were the best gluten free pies I have ever had! I would agree with their adverts that these pies are all of the flavour, none of the gluten. It is so nice that these pies are available and it doesn't feel like you have to compromise, they are better than the majority of the gluten equivalents. I would recommend them to anyone with allergies, you could even get the large ones to share and the great thing is people would never know they are free from!

What A Genius Idea!

Genius - Pie Review

One of the most common gluten free brands available is Genius. In the last year or so they have expanded and have lots of products in the frozen aisle of most supermarkets including pies(!) for a price normally around £3.50 for a pack of 2 pies. It is still much more pricy that an equivalent gluten containing pie but it is great that this convenient pie option is now available, a few years ago it was a very different story. Despite the price I must admit I do quite often have a pack in the freezer and have eaten them since they have been available. I think the recipe for the chicken pie changed some time after launch and in my opinion it is no longer as good as it was. The beef is certainly my favourite. Whilst they are both tasty they are sadly a bit lacking in meat, especially considering the relatively high price for a small pie. I would have hoped for a pie packed with content. The Steak ones are perhaps slightly better than the DS chicken pie I previously reviewed (now known as Schar) so they are now my favourite Gluten Free meat pies available in the supermarket. I have now noticed that Genius are also doing a similar sized box of 2 apple pies but I am yet to try this. I have also heard rumour of a vegetable curry pie but haven't seen it in the shops.

The pies are made in Yorkshire by Chapel Foods on behalf of Genius. The pies have been so successful that Genius have recently bought the whole of Chapel Foods. It is unclear whether they will continue to make the non-gluten free pies but they have stated they will increase the range and distribution of the gluten free ones which sounds good to me! The breakdown of the scores for the Chicken & Steak pies are below.

Genius Steak PieGenius Steak Pie

Steak

Colour – 4.0 out of 7 - This pie was matt, not golden. They could use a glaze, but it did go brown after leaving it in the oven for longer than they said.

Condition – 5.0 out of 7 These pies generally don't come out of its case that well (but it is gluten free). Not quite as mass produced in appearance as the DS ones but doesn't look as good.

Cheapness – 5.5 out of 7 - £3.50 seems slightly expensive given the lack of meat. £3 would seem more reasonable but I have given it a good score because it is comparable to other Gluten Free products. Different qualities to the DS ones but come out about the same overall.

Capacity – 3.5 out of 7 - The pies are not all that big being quite shallow. Gluten Free pies do tend to be smaller than other pies for some reason. I have often found not much meat in these pies so a relatively low score. The pictures are a bit deceptive, I have generally found less content than it looks like in the pictures.

Chewiness – 6.0 out of 7 - The steak filling was not chewy, the pastry was slightly chewy but not crumbly which is good pastry for gluten free. It was almost like puff pastry, a bit gooey on sides.

Content – 6.5 out of 7 – The beef was tasty but not much meat. In general I have found less meat than in the chicken pie but this is made up for because the flavour is much better. In fact the flavour is fantastic in these steak pies, rich and meaty. Not just a generic steak flavour.

Consistency – 5.0 out of 7 - The gravy is okay, it wasn't too runny. It helps the pie slip down well. I have eaten quite a lot of these pies and they are consistently good.

Steak (Genius)
5.07/7

Chicken & Gravy

In general the chicken pies are very much the same as the steak versions but with different filling. The meat is equally as tender as the steak version so it is only the content which I have given a different score.

Genius Chicken & Gravy PieGenius Chicken & Gravy Pie

Content – 4 out of 7 - The filling does not taste anywhere near as good as the beef version. There is still not a lot of meat despite chicken being much cheaper than beef. I feel that the recipe for these pies has changed since they launched. They used to have quite a generic chicken gravy flavour, which was nothing exciting but nice enough. Now the flavour has become a bit odd and I don't like it all that much. Perhaps the change was in an effort to make the flavour distinctive but I think they should have kept it simple!

Pieday Friday - Gluten Free and Wembley Special - 15th May 2015

It's Friday! It's Pieday!

It's been about a month since our last Pieday Friday to celebrate the upcoming British Pie Awards, which we were delighted to judge and live blog at, but with so many more exciting pie developments since then we couldn't resist a cheeky pie news round-up!

We're going to Wembley! Source: WWFCOfficial Twitter
Pierateers will be rating pie at Wem-ber-ley!

There's always been a strong link between football and pie. We've highlighted it many a time, including in our "Pies and Football - a match made in heaven" article. We've even created the PIEremiership, to record the half time pies we've eaten at football grounds across the country and you may have spotted our "Best Pie in London Restaurants" article rates football-related pie shop Piebury Corner as our number 1!

We've rated over 500 pies, including a number of football pies
But we have still not been able to rate a pie at the home of football, Wembley Stadium... until now!

It's probably one of the worst kept secrets on Pierate that we are Wycombe Wanderers fans and we are delighted to announce that Wycombe Wanderers are going to Wembley! They beat Plymouth in the League Two playoffs to join Southend United in the final. Those who know the Pierateers well will know we also have a soft spot for Southend, with Pierateer Rob having been born in Southend and regular trips made to Southend-on-Sea in the past, making this a dream final for the lads! We even had our 500th pie in Southend-on-Sea back in March, the day after watching Southend v Wycombe!

While tickets are not quite in the bag yet, we can't wait to get our hands on them and head to Wembley on Saturday 23rd May, with a pre-match pie for this 5:30pm kick off very much on the agenda! Will the pie hit the back of the net? Will it live up to the hype as the pie of choice at the home of football? Will it be well priced or an absolute rip-off, as we have heard it might be? You'll find out on www.pierate.co.uk!

Pierateers filming with BBC Sport
Speaking of rip off pies, you may well have seen that Pierateer Rob was called upon by BBC One hit show "Rip Off Britain" to give his expert pie opinion recently on football pies. You can find out more about what he said and view the show on BBC iplayer by visiting our Rip Off Britain: Football Pies article.

And if you want to find out more about the match winning pies they sell at Morecambe FC, currently top of our PIEremiership, you can see both Head Chef Graham and ourselves in a video on the BBC Sport website talking football pies!

New Gluten Free Pie Reviews page!

On the Pierate Ship we recognise that gluten free pastry requires great skill and can be even more complex than standard gluten pastry, so we want to acknowledge all the hard work put in to produce pies for those who cannot eat gluten.

Since 4th October 2013 we have had a gluten free pie reviewer aboard the Pierate Ship, in the form of Pierateer ALE. As a coeliac she has rated a range of gluten free pies in that time and we now have enough to make a dedicated Gluten Free Pie Reviews page! We hope all our gluten free pie fans will enjoy it, as we develop it over the coming months with more gluten free pies we rate!

You may also be interested to know it is Coeliac Awareness Week 2015 this week (11-17th May).

Tweet of the Week - David Beckham loves pies!

It's no secret that David Beckham loves the pies at Tony's Pie and Mash Shop, near where David grew up in London. This week David, who has now turned 40, was once again featured in the papers sharing his love of pie and mash. Now he's no longer playing football, it's good to know David can tuck into the pies at his leisure! Back of the net!

While David already features in our "Celebrities who love pie" article, we've just added the following photo:

500 Pie Reviews for the Pie-fessionals at Pierate!

We won't bang on about it too much more, as you probably have to have been living on another planet to miss that we have just reached 500 pie reviews on the web's leading pie review website!

You can view them all in our updated Pierate Pie Rankings table and we marked the occasion with a little "500 Pies Press Release" to sum up just a few of the pie-lights of the first five and a half years on board the Pierate Ship!

British Pie Awards 2015 go Gluten Free!

Pie Rating at the British Pie Awards 2014
Pie Rating at the British Pie Awards 2014!
The British Pie Awards 2015 are just days away and with them once again expecting 800 pies from across Britain and beyond to be rated, you won't be surprised to know we've been called up again this year, having been a judge at the British Pie Awards last year and volunteer helpers at the awards in 2013. After all, we have just reached our 500th pie review on Pierate Pie Reviews, meaning we've probably rated as many pies as all the other judges put together!

Yes, following Pierateer Tim's judging debut last year, we have been called in again to lend our pie rating skills to the com-pie-tition, alongside TV chef Andy Bates, food critic Charles Campion and food writer Rachel Green. And while the British Pie Awards use a significantly different set of criteria to us, rather than the 7 Cs of pie rating that we have used to rate 500 pies on Pierate, there are very few pie experts they could call on with more ex-pie-rience than us when it comes to the pie-fect pie judge!

Meet the pie-fessionals!

Find out more about the Pierateers as we reach 500 Pie Reviews in our story so far or on our "About Us" page!

Right: Filming with BBC Sport about pies!

But you may not know that since 4th October 2013 we have also had a gluten free pie reviewer aboard the Pierate Ship, in the form of Pierateer ALE. In this time she has reviewed 10 different gluten free pies from a number of different companies and you can see all the gluten free pie reviews here.

But why am I telling you this? Well, because that clever team at the British Pie Awards have finally recognised the great skill and art required to make a top rated gluten free pie, as evidenced by the fact that there will for the first time be a Gluten Free Pie Class at the British Pie Awards 2015!

Of course you may not want to wait to find out who rates well in the Gluten Free Pie Class, so we've summarised our top rated gluten free pies in a number of flavours to whet your ap-pie-tite and hope to find out about even more great gluten free pie sellers when the BPA results are announced! Enjoy!

The results are out! Find out who won the Gluten Free Pie Class in our British Pie Awards 2015 review!

No.G - Gluten Free Pie

No.G - Chicken, Bacon & Leek Pie Review
When SJL came home from the supermarket and presented me with a No.G GF quiche and pie i was really quite excited!! Especially so as it was reduced which in my mind is even better!! We decided to have half quiche and half pie each with our dinner so whipped them in the oven and prepped the veg! They are super quick to cook, taking only 15 mins in the oven which is appealing to me as i get to impatient waiting for food when hungry!!

My first thoughts were that they were well presented - the pie even had writing on the top which is pretty smart! I thought that they were a little on the small side so was glad we had plenty of veg to go with them! First of all i tried the quiche which was amazing!! Maybe its was the fantastic quiche that gave me to high expectations for the pie, but i felt that it wasn't as good as the quiche so maybe i shouldn't have eaten them at the same time!! The pastry was soft, very crumbly and tasted like pastry we make at home, a bit floury. I thought the pastry could be more crispy like the quiche. So onto the filling....I am not sure why but the filling didn't quite win me over. I felt that the chicken could have been in bigger chunks but it did have a nice texture and wasn't at all chewy.  SJL thought there were nice flavours, but a bit bland compared to the quiche.
Condition – 6 - Looked good with lettering, a bit broken but my fault as it said to keep it flat.
Colour – 5 - A bit pale
Cheapness – 4.75 - £2.80 is a bit expensive.
Capacity – 5.5 – No air gap, well filled. A bit shallow.
Chewiness – 6.5 - Not at all chewy
Content – 4 – Flavor didn’t inspire me.
Consistency – 5.5 - Pastry a bit floury, almost not there, kinda dissolved in the mouth, not in a good way. Good consistency to the filling.

Didn't really blow me away enough that I felt like I would want to pay £2.80 for it. Might try it again, would be keen to try more flavours as this one didn't really work for me, but I didn't think the filling tasted bad, it might be that other people would like it. Give it a go if you like chicken, bacon and leek. I did really like the Quiche but again, I wouldn't pay £2.70 very often, maybe an occasional treat.

M & S shine like stars

Marks and Spencer - Gluten Free Mince Pie Review

Whilst out the other day a family member presented me with a lovely looking box of four gluten free mince pies from Marks and Spencer. At first one wouldn't think that this was a Gluten Free product as it wasn't packaged in the normal 'Free From' style that most supermarkets use. This was quite nice in a way although I suppose there is the danger that fellow coeliacs might miss them!

Upon opening the box, there were quite a few rather large crumbs which had been dislodged, however, I think this just reflects the transportation after leaving the supermarket. To confirm this I felt it was my duty to eat more than one box and the other box (transported by bicycle) was fine. Although one could argue it may not be a pie as it is not completely enclosed in pastry, I do rather like the pretty star on top instead of a complete lid. But the real question is how would it taste? Would it beat the Pierate Recommended Gluten Free mince pies from Foodamentalists and We Love Cake? See below for scores!

marks and spencer gluten free mince pies

marks and spencer gluten free mince pies

Condition – 5.75 out of 7 – This reflects the fact that the pasty is a little bit crumbly, but this is expected with Gluten Free pastry. its definitely not a pie that you think to yourself "I must not eat this in public to avoid a crumbly mess"!!

Colour – 6.25 out of 7 – Pretty much the optimum colour I would expect for a mince pie.

Cheapness – 5.0 out of 7 – At a bit over £3 this is pretty expensive even for GF products, but i must say it was worth it, especially the first box which was free to me!!

Capacity – 6.0 out of 7 – Couldn't be much better, but it would be quite hard to hide it in this instance because you can see the filling.

Chewiness – 6.5 out of 7 – Normally the mincemeat in mince pies is rather chewy. However, in these it is almost soft. It hasn't got full marks because there is some residual chewiness. The pastry was divine and melt in the mouth!

Content – 6.25 out of 7 – I really liked the taste of the mincemeat which was the perfect sweetness and complimented the pastry very nicely.

Consistency – 6.25 out of 7 – This worked well as a package, really great pie!

Perfect Pastry!!

Foodamentalists Gluten Free Pie Reviews

From the moment I set my eyes on these Foodamentalist pies I couldn't wait to eat them!! I repeatedly asked Pierateer SJL "are you sure they are gluten free?" "have you made a mistake?" The reason for my confusion, is that I have never seen a gluten free pie so beautifully presented that arrived in a small cellophane wrapper with absolutely NO supportive packaging!!! I know what your thinking..INCREDIBLE!! Well I am not lying to you and I have the pictures for evidence (well okay, you just have to take my word about the gluten free part!!). On the menu was: fidget pie; pork, venison and cranberry; pork, black pudding and caramelised red onion pie and traditional pork pie. But don't worry, I didn't eat them all on my own!! Priced at £1.90 - £2.50 on their website this is a reasonable price for a quality product.

Foodamentalist Pies

For starters was the traditional pork pie which like any pork pie, we ate cold. Having never found a GF pork pie, I was rather looking forward to this. However, my first mouthful filled me with disappointment as I had high hopes for these little fellas. I couldnt quite work out what this pie was trying to be - it looked like a traditional pork pie and was called this, but yet it largely tasted of sage. If anything, this pie reminded me of a sausage roll. It wasn't as crusty and didn't contain jelly like a gluten equivalent, which did affect the consistency as the filling didn't hold together as well as I would expect a picnic finger pie to do so. The texture was actually quite pleasant though, and not at all chewy like normal meat pies are.

Trying not to let this dampen my enthusiasm I moved onto the main course. First out of the oven was fidget pie.The pastry was so light, like nothing I have tried before and it had a slight crunch to it. The colour was again great and there was no air gap - a jam packed pie!! Although, I must admit that I couldn't really distinguish between the pastry and the filling as they both tasted fairly similar. The flavour was okay and felt nice and traditional.

Pork, black pudding and caramelised red onion. I was fairly excited about the black pudding as I quite like it but its not something us coeliacs find much. Although, this did disappoint me as I didn't really like the taste and the pie lacked flavour.

Lastly I tried what I thought was the best of all, the pork, chicken and stuffing....um...non-pie. It had a crumble topping so us Pierateers cant really call it a pie (as it's not fully encased). But I thought that I would mention that it had the best flavour of all the pies.

In conclusion, the pastry on these pies is probably gluten free world class! Like nothing I have ever tried before and will probably try again. It was so light, beautifully golden and deliciously tasty. Thank you Foodamentalists. However, the fillings despite being a lovely texture and not at all chewy, really did lack flavour. It must be noted that these pies had been frozen before I received them, which may have affected the flavour. As the pies are on their own, I don't plan to eat these again but if the flavour is improved I would jump at the opportunity as these really could be delicious pies!!

But before I go I must mention the desert! Foodamentalists were also good enough to send a box of Gluten Free Frangipane Mince Pies. The thing I liked about these is that they looked homemade and not like they came out of a machine. The frangipane topping was a really nice change and added to the taste. The mincemeat was similar to any other but not as sugary, this was something I liked. All in all a pretty good pie!

Mince Pies Aren't Just for Christmas

We Love Cake Gluten Free Mince Pie Review

I love mince pies and feel that they should be available all year round!! To avoid disappointment I always stock up on mince meat at Christmas so i can make them at other times of the year too!!  Something slightly disappointing about shop brought mince meat in jars or in pies, is that it always seems to taste the same!! Something you don't have to put up with if you make your own mincemeat from scratch. Despite this, I am still up for a shop brought mince pie every so often, which is what made me try these.

I actually quite like the packaging for this pie and the name of the company 'love cake'.  It's questionable why a cake company is making pies, but I think I'll let them off on this occasion!! Upon opening the box, every single pie was in tact!!  One comment i would make is that they weren't very golden in colour. They tasted great, and I really looked forward to trying another one the next day to see if it would be as good - and it was. The pastry was almost a bit crunchy, but its hard to get GF pastry to work!! I would definitely recommend these pies and eat one again.

Discover Surprising DS Gluten Free Pies

DS Gluten Free Chicken and Mushroom Pie Review

On my hunt for gluten free pies to try, I came across the chicken and mushroom gluten free pie from DS. This company produced their first gluten free line in 1981 and they now have a variety of gluten free products like bread, biscuits, and pastry. Before trying this pie I must admit I was a little unsure about how it would turn out as gluten free pastry is particularly crumbly!

However, upon opening the box, I was rather shocked to find 2 individually packed immaculate little pies.
Something which also made me smile was that it wasn't overpackaged with unnecessary plastic trays or really thick plastic wrapping! I followed the instructions and cooked them from frozen for 30 minutes in their cases. When I took them out of the oven, the pies had nicely browned on top, although they weren't evenly browned. See picture below:

Upon cutting into the pie I was a little disappointed at how shallow the pie was, as it only allowed for a few small pieces of chicken. The flavour of the pie was not something to be disappointed about, there was the right amount of sauce and it was nice and flavoursome- rather unexpected for a gluten free frozen pie! The real winner was the pastry. The texture was good and held together really well! Given that a non-coeliac also enjoyed this pie as much as I did I would definitely buy this pie again.

A pack of two pies can be purchased frozen from Sainsburys for £3.29 which I consider to be good value as is gluten free. The pies are also available from Booths, Tesco and online at www.goodnessdirect.co.uk

A GLUTEN FREE pie thats worth eating - yes honestly!!

When I was invited to review a gluten free pie for the pierateers I was shocked but very excited! I had never tried a gluten free apple pie before!! So my review is based on a comparisson between what I remember apple pies to taste like before I was diagnosed as a coeliac four years ago. Just seeing the box of gluten free pies put a big smile on my face (with the exception of the supermarket name).

Prior to opening the box, I was expecting a crumbly mess of broken pieces of apple pie - because gluten free pastry does NOT hold together. To my surprise, this was not how I found the four gleaming pies. Not even a crumble had dislodged. See picture below!!

The colour was great, and the top was sprinkled with a little sugar - just the right amount.  My first bite filled me with joy and yet slight shock of the slightly fake apple taste, which I had forgotten is an element of the classic apple pie. I quickly got over this and was blown away by the amazing pastry. There was no air gap beneath the lid (which is the classic sign of a cheap pie). I think that the filling, could have had a higher proportion of apple pieces to apple syrup and the syrup was slightly rubbery. None the less, I would definitely buy this pie again and recommend to fellow coeliacs. Coming in at around £2.00 for four pies, this is a competitive price given that gluten free foodstuffs are normally twice the price of a branded product.
