British Pie Week 2016 - Day Three

Day Three of British Pie Week saw Pierateers RAS, SJL and TJP complete one of their #PiePledge commitments by taking the day off work to go to the British Pie Awards, followed by a trip to Mad O'Rourkes Pie Factory pub in Tipton, Birmingham - something they've planned to do for years!

Pierateer RAS and the Cow Pie!
After spending day one away in Cardiff, picking up some Clark's Pies direct from their shop in South Cardiff as part of his #TriPie pie pledge, day three of British Pie Week saw the English leg of the pledge. In two parts, it consisted of judging for the first time at the British Pie Awards, followed by taking on the Desperate Dan Cow Pie Challenge at Tipton's very own Mad O'Rourkes Pie Factory pub.

Hosted once again in St Mary's Church in the centre of Melton Mowbray, the British Pie Awards saw over 100 judges rate just under 800 pies this year. Pierateers Rob and Tim were both on the "Speciality Meats" category and we'll be writing up a review of the day soon, once results are out on Friday! In the meantime, you can catch up on our live blogging of the British Pie Awards, which includes a number of videos taken by Pierateer Sam.

In the evening we made our way over to Tipton, just north of Birmingham, for a long awaited visit to Mad O'Rourkes Pie Factory. While Sam and Tim went for other pies, Rob took on the 4lb Desperate Dan Cow Pie Challenge, which you can read more about in our review tomorrow!

Pierateer SJL

On Day Three of British Pie Week Pierateer Sam continued his unique ways to eat pie series by doing a pie review in the middle of the British Pie Awards! With the awards only being held once a year, this immediately reduces the chances of being able to complete this particular way of eating a pie! This follows on from yesterday's Pie Kebab and Sam drinking a pie in Monday's pie-nt challenge, which you can watch the video of here.

Ways2EatPie #4 - Pie at Night

It is getting late but this hasn't stopped Pierateer SJL from meeting his #PiePledge to bring you a pie review every day of British Pie Week 2016. However, as it is late we find that SJL has already gone to bed. The pie he has chosen to review is a Scotch Pie from a quality frozen food specialist, see the video below.

At the incredible price of only 23.2p each these pies are punching above their weight, but only just. If you are really short on cash it is better than any other similarly priced pies I have had but don't expect too much, Scotch pies are normally cheap anyway and these are quite small.

British Pie Week 2016 - Day Two

It seems day one of British Pie Week 2016 came and went in a blur, with Pierateer Rob kicking off his #PiePledge of eating pie in England, Scotland and Wales with a trip to Cardiff! Meanwhile Pierateer Tim ate 7 pies on day one of his 7x7 challenge and Pierateer Sam DRANK a pie!

Here’s some of the things we got up to on Day Two of British Pie Week!

Pierateer RAS

After spending day one away in Cardiff, picking up some Clark's Pies direct from their shop in South Cardiff, day two of British Pie Week was a bit more of a leisurely affair! A morning delivery of pies from Lewis pie company was followed by a twitter debate following the publication of a controversial pie news article by the Telegraph. While it has now been corrected, the original article misquoted the pie petition owner Bill T Wulf by saying a pie typically had a top or base of pastry, rather than what he actually said which was top and base. Two totally different things, I think you'll agree!

This quickly escalated to the point where Bill T Wulf threatened to sue the Telegraph, as seen in the following tweet:

It all led to the article finally being changed, as it now has been, but still the point is that a pie should be fully encased in pastry with clearly defined base, sides and lid, as we clearly state in our Pie Dictionary!

For lunch I headed over to The Botanist in central Birmingham to have a British Pie Week lunch with fellow food blogger Laura who blogs at www.fulltothebrum.co.uk and is a fellow pie fan, reviewing a whole mix of drinks and food online. I took along a "Pierateer in Training" pack and we had fun pie rating the Chicken and Chorizo pie (review coming soon!)

Nice Pie Review
Nice Pie selection
Having eaten two pies from Nice Pie the previous day, Pierateer Rob was also able to get his reviews up and both were Pierate Highly Recommended! Click here to read the reviews of the Steak, Ale and Stilton and the Braised Beef, Roasted Onion and Cheddar Pie!

For evening meal I started on the Wilfreds Pie Range from Lewis pies, having their lamb, steak and potato and chicken and vegetable pies. The reviews will come soon, followed by the other three pies in their range later in the week! All were nice, decent pies for £2-£2.50, even if they could have done with a bit more filling to get a top score on the 7 Cs of pie rating.

The evening was rounded off with a couple of the Clark's pies I got in Wales, when Pierateers Sam and Tim arrived for a pre-British Pie Awards catch up!

Pierateer SJL

On Day Two Pierateer Sam continued his unique ways to eat pie series with a Pie Kebab. This followed Sam drinking - yes, that's right, I said drinking - a pie in yesterday's pie-nt challenge, which you can watch the video of here.

Ways2EatPie #3 - British Pie Awards

With the British Pie Awards coinciding with British Pie Week for the first time SJL interrupted his live blogging and attempted to make a video review in the middle of the commotion of the awards themselves. The pie being reviewed was a Dickinsen & Morris pie from Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe in Melton Mowbray.

Overall this wasn't a bad effort from Dickinsen & Morris. The ham and the egg complemented each other and added some variety to the filling. Perhaps the ham could have been more like the quality pork they use in their standard pork pies rather than cured ham. The ham itself would have been sickly without the egg to break it up. At £3.50 this was not bad value being enough for 2 or 3 people.

Reci-pie Review: Aldi's Bacon, Leek and Sweetcorn Pie

The Ship's Cook is making her way through pie recipes from the UK's major supermarkets and this British Pie Week outing is from Aldi. Check back this weekend to see how the Ship's Cook gets on with baking her own British Pierate Pie!

If my calculations are correct, I must have baked my way around almost half of the UK's major supermarkets by now, and there are still more to come! That's a lot of pies, but never fear readers, because I'm happy to test them out so you don't have to (although I think you should anyway because pies are delicious).

The Recipe:

This time I headed to Aldi's website, and the recipe I chose was a bacon, leek and sweetcorn pie with puff pastry. You can find it here: https://www.aldi.co.uk/en/recipes/recipes-by-category/quick-and-easy/bacon-leek-and-sweetcorn-puff-pie/

Unfortunately, Aldi's selection of pie recipes was in fact a selection of stews with lids, so I had to add my own blind baked shortcrust base. Clearly the Pierateers need to do some more campaigning - or should that be cam-pie-ning?

The 7 Cs of Pie Rating:

Colour:
I always get a bit impatient with puff pastry, but I was really good this time and left it in the oven long enough to turn golden brown - the milk and egg glaze definitely helped speed this up a bit, and it looked nicely cooked and crispy when I served it.

Consistency:
The sauce in this pie is really thick and creamy thanks to the cheese - when I tried it on its own it was a bit too rich but it went very well with the crispy pastry case and lid.

Capacity:
If you add your own pastry base - great, there's loads of filling to stuff in your pie. If you follow the original recipe - a bit disappointing because there's only a lid.

Chewiness:
No chewiness from the meat here - you just want to make sure your bacon is nice and crispy and your leeks are soft. The sweetcorn, leeks and bacon add some nice texture against the creamy sauce.

Cheapness:
This pie is nice and cheap, especially if you're using up the end of packet of bacon. It gets more expensive if you use branded soft cheese, but I didn't and it still tasted lovely. It's also very rich so you could probably feed more than the suggested four people and everyone would still be quite happy.

Content:
This was a really tasty pie, and a little bit different to the chicken and leek combination you often see. Definitely use smoked bacon as suggested, it adds a really nice smoky flavour that balances out the sweetness of the sweetcorn and leeks and goes really well with the cream cheese.

Condition:
This pie came out of the oven looking great, and it held together really well when I served it - it definitely suits being a proper, fully-encased-in-pastry pie. It also smelled absolutely delicious, which I think was down to the bacon, and I couldn't wait to eat it.

British Pie Awards 2016 - Live!

British Pie Awards 2014 - Church
The home of the British Pie Awards

The day of the British Pie Awards has arrived! Held in St Mary’s Church in the heart of Melton Mowbray, it is a spectacular setting in the home of the pork pie. The sun may not be shining - it's chucking it down with rain in Birmingham as we set off! - but around 100 judges are making their way to the warm, dry venue to rate around 800 pies from across Britain and beyond! Of course you won't be surprised to know we've been called up to judge again this year, having been a judge at the British Pie Awards last year and in 2014 and volunteer helpers at the awards in 2013.

Yes, following Pierateer Sam judging last year, we have been called in again to lend our pie rating skills to the com-pie-tition, alongside TV chef Andy Bates, food critic Charles Campion and food writer Rachel Green. And while the British Pie Awards use a significantly different set of criteria to us, rather than the 7 Cs of pie rating that we have used to rate 500 pies on Pierate, there are very few pie experts they could call on with more ex-pie-rience than us when it comes to the pie-fect pie judge!

This year Rob, Sam and Tim are heading over to Melton Mowbray and recording what happens in their live blog posts below and on Twitter. Check back for updates during the day!

8.00 - The lads are up and ready to go for the British Pie Awards 2016!

8.15 - It's blowing a gale here in Birmingham as we set off but hopefully it will brighten up later in Melton Mowbray! The sight of hundreds of pies will certainly brighten the day!

9.22 - The three Pierateers are on the train to Melton Mowbray! Having done this journey many times before we know the signal is sporadic so will message again in an hour or so when we arrive, after this quote!

9.25 - Pierateer TJP says: "The pie count is on 14 this British Pie Week and I'm hoping to break 30 by 3pm!" - That's the beauty of the British Pie Awards judging - so many pies to try!

10:40 - Tim, Rob and Sam are now in St Mary's. The big news is that we are judging Catgory 11, the Specialty Meat category! Sounds Great!

10:50 - The head judges for each category go into their briefing in this cathedral of pie.

11:00 - You can sense the anticipation in the air. The church is looking great

11:10 - The judges are being briefed. The head judge carefully explains the process. Things are taken seriously here.

11:15 - I have just been handed the words to today's blessing of the pies, it is quite brilliant. Sounds like it may be sung.

So my, my, what beautiful pies,
They've got a great aroma,
Wafting up to the skies,
And meat or veg or fruity,
We must give them a try;
We thank God for the bakers so wises,
Who have baked us all these wonderful pies.
Amen.

11:20 - Judges are finding their places. We are now having an opening address from the head of Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association. While we wait have a look at this beauty in the special category to celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday.

11:25 - Some of you may have guessed already but we sang the prayer to the tune of 'American Pie'. Surreal moment here in Melton Mowbray.

11:35 - Judging commences! The first hot pies come out the oven.

12:00 - Rob is advising the other judges on Pie reviewing. We have reviewed over 500 after all! Category 11 is into full swing.

12:15 - Speaking to our friends at nice pie you realise how much work goes into setting up the British Pie Awards. They started on Monday getting the church ready.

12:30 - We have just interviewed Matthew O'Callaghan, head of the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association. He told us the pie industry is worth £1 billion to the UK economy! Incredible. See video below.

12:30 - Chatting with Paul from Mrs King's pies. He trained as a butcher but claims the key to a good pie is mastering the very different arts of both butchery and bakery which is why it is difficult to make a winning pie.

13:00 - Some of these pies are so beautiful it is a shame to see them dismantled. I have just been watching a tiered pies being cut into. There was some controversy regarding whether it was fully encased, see video link.

13:20 - We take time out to chat to our very own Tim and also Tim Coleman who are both judging category 11.

13:30  - Some controversial looking pies here. There are a few that look like loaves of bread. According the the judges they taste like bread too!

13:45 - The discarded pie is starting to mount up here on the hot chicken category. Apparently some brilliant pies found already.

13:50 - Just had a nice long chat with the vicar of the church we are in. He is in his 6th year of judging. He says he is happy that the church is being used by the community. Regarding the quirky prayer he says he can't bless a pie in a serious way. He seems to love the event and in all seriousness it couldn't happen here without his permission so thanks!

14:00 - Andy Bates is on the Pub pie category this year. It is that stage where the judges are starting to get full of pie! He says they have see quite a lot of steak & ale and vegetarian pies in the category.

14:40 - Some categories are starting to finish now but we are still going on Category 11. Our very own Pierateer Rob takes us through the judging techniques.

14:55 - The pies have been rated. A top 3 has been established and our work is done! Thanks to the British Pie Awards for hosting us and see you again next year!

The winners at the British Pie Awards will be announced on Friday 11th March on the @BritishPies twitter feed and updated on the British Pie Awards website.

Ways2EatPie #2 - Pie Kebab

The second edition of Pierateer SJL's challenge to review a pie in a new way on every day of British Pie Week 2016. This challenge uses Steak & Ale 'canapies' from Square Pie.

Yes I was quite dismissive of these pies when I previously reviewed them but I found them much better this time around. They were better filled which is very important with a small pie like this. They are convenient for occasional pie need such as putting them on a stick or a pie-cnic but in general I would stick to the full sized version rather than eating a whole box of these.

They do the classic pie flavours NICE-ly

Nice Pie Steak and Cheese Pie Reviews

One of the challenges for a Pierateer in British Pie Week is how to fit in all the pies you want to eat and rate! That explains why for brunch on day one of British Pie Week I had two meat pies from Nice Pie - who fans of Pierate will know have produced countless Pierate Highly Recommended and Pierate Recommended pies (see the table of past Nice Pies here!) The pies were the Steak, Ale and Stilton and the Braised Beef, Roasted Onion and Cheddar Pie.

Nice Pie Steak and Cheese Pie Review
Nice Pie Steak and Stilton (left) and Beef and Cheddar (right)

With all the exotic pies we’ve rated from Nice Pie over the years, you’d be forgiven for thinking that they only do pies full of meat you’d never expect to be sold in a pie! But as delicious as the kangaroo, zebra and wild squirrel pies were, sometimes people may just want a “typical” British pie to eat! Fear not, for Nice Pie haven’t neglected their homely, British pie flavours for the sole purpose of exotic pie production! Included in the traditional range of pies are these two steak and cheese pies, both of which went down very nicely indeed when eaten and rated!

Nice Pie Steak and Cheese Pie Review
Nice Pie Steak, Ale and Stilton Pie Review
It was the filling that really stood out in these pies, absolutely bursting with meaty steak and beef chunks that were so tender and flavoursome. It really amazes me how they can pack so much meat into these pies, as the capacity is always so full to the brim! The only slight downside is that with so much meat in there it can mean the pastry struggles to hold all the filling in, especially if you try to eat it by hand as I did. This is however a very small criticism as the main thing is to have a packed, flavoursome pie filling and this pie certainly provides that!

Out of the two, the steak and stilton stood out a bit more, with a bit more cheese flavour coming through and the lack of distraction from the onion. But that is really my personal preference, and I would certainly say both were very good pies. I still don’t know quite how they manage to make the meat sooooo tender and flavoursome, unlike a lot of the meat in other pies I eat which can be a bit dry and chewy in places even if the pie filling is very moist. The gravy was pretty much spot on and the cheese flavoured both pies well, yet wasn’t overpowering.

Nice Pie Steak and Cheese Pie Review
Nice Pie Beef and Cheddar Pie Review
The pastry is nicely golden (although could be a little stronger in colour on the sides/base for piefection) holding in the filling admirably well considering how good the capacity is and moist the filling can be! The shortcrust pastry compliments the pie well and as a whole really is a top product. When nit-picking on the details, the pastry was a little crumbly in places, particularly around the lid to sides join, which became loose upon picking the pie up and eating it, but considering these pies had travelled by post to us it’s hard to be overly critical of this. A slightly crisper side and base pastry would have been ideal but it’s hard to overly fault the quality of these pies.

Once again Nice Pie have done us proud, producing two more Pierate Highly Recommended pies – and while it’s hard to resist the amazing range of exotic pies Nice Pie do, you would certainly be missing out if you didn’t tuck into a more traditional steak and cheese pie from their range when given the chance!

The eager eyed among you will have noticed in our Pie Rankings we've rated a Steak and Stilton pie from Nice Pie a few years ago, which scored a bit lower than this Steak, Ale and Stilton pie. I think this is an encouraging sign they are still striving to improve their pie recipes and also reflects that the individual pies (verses the family pie rated before) are that bit better in terms of pie:filling ratio. I’ve given these two pies today the same score due to the similarity of the fillings and would suggest you choose based on your preference of ale and stilton or onion and cheddar. Or better still, do what I did and have one of each!

Nice Pie Steak, Ale and Stilton Pie and Braised Beef, Roasted Onion and Cheddar Pie
Score: 6.14/7

Ways2EatPie #1 - Pie-nt

The first part of Pierateer SJL's British Pie Week #PiePledge to review a pie in a unique way everyday of British Pie Week 2016.

This review sees him take on the famous Clark's Pies in the form of a Potato & Beef pie, see the video below.

Overall I like these pies having had a them a few times. Nice and sturdy so they can be eaten by hand. The only other pies I have found with such thick pastry are those from Sweeney and Todd but the Clark's pastry is crunchy rather than gooey. Despite only 6% beef they make it taste nice and meaty. Perhaps the lard used for the pastry helps. Sadly loses marks as the one in the video was quite empty.

British Pie Week 2016 - Day One

The countdown timer has struck zero and British Pie Week 2016 has begun – so what more motivation do you need?! Grab a pie, make a pie, tweet your #PiePledge. Here’s some things you can do this British Pie Week!

You can follow the Pierateers on Twitter and find out how their crazy #PiePledges are going!
You can read about pies.
You can choose a pie (we have over 500 pies reviewed in our rankings table!)
Think up some puns for the Pie Dictionary!
You can suggest a pie you’ve enjoyed.

As for the Pierateers, we are ready and waiting for probably the biggest British Pie Week yet! All the Pierateers have made Pie Pledges of some sort for this week, showing their commitment to pie, plus this year the ground breaking news is that the British Pie Awards 2016 are taking place a month early, to coincide with British Pie Week! We'll be there as judges and media to cover the event!

British Pie Week Nice Pie Pierate Pie
Nice Pie's Pierate Logo Pie from British Pie Week 2014!
It seems this year, more than any before, people are bigging up British Pie Week. Plenty of pubs and shops are doing something special for British Pie Week and even Jus-Rol, creators of British Pie Week, have got on board more with a dedicated @BritPieWeek Twitter feed running for the second year!

And while we may not have the amazing Pierate Logo pie to enjoy this year (right, made especially for us by Nice Pie in 2014) we have already got some more of their pies to rate and are certain there will be plenty of other pie antics this coming week! Especially if our crazy #PiePledges are anything to go by!

So whatever you do, go crazy for pie this British Pie Week! Enjoy!

Pierateer RAS

You know it's British Pie Week when you're trying to balance how much pie to eat for brunch before eating pie for lunch too! But there's worse things to have to balance in life, so I decided to go for just 2 pies for brunch before I head to Cardiff to pick up some pies later as part of my #TriPie pie pledge.

Nice Pie Review
Nice Pie selection
Having already stayed up just past midnight to complete our Pierateers Pie Pledge article, I couldn't resist kicking off British Pie Week with a Mr Kipling pie. Being over 5 years since we first rated these national institutions of the pie world, we'll be re-rating them this pie week!

For brunch I had two pies from Nice Pie - who fans of Pierate will know have produced countless Pierate Highly Recommended and Pierate Recommended pies! The pies I ate and rated today are the Steak, Ale and Stilton and the Braised Beef, Roasted Onion and Cheddar Pie!

As I only had a few hours in Cardiff, I had my eyes on the pies from the start, heading straight down to Clarks Pie Shop on Bromsgrove Street, a 20 minute journey from the train station. While I was too late to get a hot pie for my lunch (serving ends at 1:30pm) I was kindly let in the back and given a bag of pies after a chat with Paul, just back from a delivery round, and Amanda.

They were very friendly, giving me a bit of the history of the 100 year old pie business and informing me about their pies, which are sold in many chip shops and convenience stores in the area.

I just managed to pick up a Peters pie, also baked in Wales, to eat cold while heading on the train back to Birmingham.

It was also great to see that #BritishPieWeek was trending throughout most of the day, helped I'm sure by the shout out on BBC Radio by huge pie fan Chris Evans but also by the many pie companies and pie fans up and down the country!

Pierateer TJP

This British Pie Week, I have pledged to perform the "7 x 7". That's eating 7 pies a day for all 7 days, which means a tasty 49 pies for the week!

According to my own rules, I am allowed to eat the pies at any time of day as long as I've eaten 7 pies by the time the clock strikes midnight. Therefore my tactic was to spread the pies out evenly throughout the day, rather than having to eat all 7 in one go at the end of the day. So it felt very good to get 2 pies under my belt for breakfast, as I was already over a quarter of the way there! My breakfast pies of choice were 2 Juicy Cherry pies taken from a 6 pack of Mr Kipling "Fruity Pies". This delicious sugary hit really got me going for the day, and certainly put me in the mood for British Pie Week.

For lunch this week, I had been planning on relying on my local Eat store for hot pies. However, having discovered it had shut down last week, I instead headed out to try Castle's Pie and Mash in Camden Town. But then on arriving at Castle's, disaster struck: I found it was shut on Mondays! My back-up choice was going to be Battersea Pie Station in Camden market, but unfortunately I didn't have enough time to walk there. So instead I quickly explored the local cafes trying to find a pie but had no luck. In the end I settled on two pork, pickle and cheese pies from the deli counter in Sainsbury's, and picked up a hot pizza from the hot food counter - my rationale being that Americans would call a whole pizza a "pie". Of course this pizza wouldn't count towards my total, but what harm could it do?

Later that afternoon I ate a Bramley Apple & Tangy Blackcurrant pie from my Mr Kipling selection, bringing my total up to 4, and for dinner I enjoyed an ASDA Minced Steak & Onion pie. But here is where my error of having a whole pizza for lunch bubbled to the surface. I was feeling a little full of "heavy" food so really didn't feel like having the second ASDA Steak pie I was planning on eating. Instead I settled for an ASDA Bramley Apple Pie from a box of 6 pies, bringing my total today up to 6 pies so far...

Pierateer SJL

This week Pierateer Sam is looking to eat pies in an unusual way each day. Today sees the pie-nt challenge, so watch the video here.

British Pie Week 2016 - Pierateers #PiePledges

The countdown is over and British Pie Week is upon us! This week - from 7th to 13th March – we're joining with thousands of other pie fans in enjoying the pastry beauties that are the Great British Pie.

Apart from we're not quite like "other pie fans" in that we tend to go slightly beyond the call of duty when it comes to eating and rating pies! You may have read our British Pie Week article and know that in British Pie Week 2013 we ate 50 pies between the three of us and in British Pie Week 2014 we went even further and ate 55 pies - including making and trying a Python pie!

And we added even more to that number last year by eating 71 pies between two of us! This included a Pieathon challenge, where Sam and Rob both went three and a half days eating just pies and Rob's diet being made up of 66% pies during the week. And this year is no different, so keep reading for info on what us Pierateers are getting up to this British Pie Week!

British Pie Week Pie PledgeFirst and foremost, it is almost taken as a given that Pierateers RAS, SJL and TJP will all be eating at least one pie every day in British Pie Week - while rating as many of them as feasible this week too. In addition, all three of us will be heading to Melton Mowbray on Wednesday for the British Pie Awards 2016, with Tim and Rob judging and Sam providing the media coverage! But the Pierateers also have their own unique ways of celebrating British Pie Week as follows, which we've named our #PiePledge commitments to pie!

As well as taking the whole of British Pie Week off work and judging at the British Pie Awards, Pierateer RAS has committed to travelling to Wales and Scotland to rate some pies, and the plane has been booked for his flight back from Scotland so he can have "Pie In The Sky"!

Yes, for the first time Pierateer Rob will truly be putting the BRITISH in British Pie Week, travelling to all three countries that make up Great Britain in order to rate some new pies. On Monday he'll be heading to Cardiff for some Clark's Pies, made in Wales for over 100 years now! On Wednesday he'll join around a hundred other judges at the British Pie Awards in Melton Mowbray, central England. While on Thursday he'll be picking up the Scotch Pie World Champion from Kandy Bar in Scotland, before flying back to Birmingham in order to have "Pie in the Sky"!

Find out what the Pierateers commit to do during British Pie Week and how they get on by following the #PiePledge hashtag on Twitter this year!

Pierateer TJP has gone for quantity in his #PiePledge this year, perhaps feeling slightly guilty that he was over in Greece last British Pie Week and didn't get to contribute to the 71 pies eaten by the Pierateers last year! Here's Tim's pie pledge:

The pies won't be lacking for Pierateer SJL either, as he will be eating pies every day of British Pie Week too, although he's gone for the unusual challenge of eating a pie in a different way each day of the week! We eagerly look forward to the pie plans he has and if you have any suggestions of weird ways to eat a pie, do send us a tweet to @pierateers!!

Our Ship's Cook is planning to bake up a storm once again this year, following her amazing "Four course dinner pie" from last British Pie Week! This year she's going to be making a Great British Pierate Ship, using ingredients that Pierateer Rob will pick up from England, Scotland and Wales, plus a special ingredient from Ireland too! (Well, it's part of the British Isles!)

And Pierateer ARL - our vegetarian pierateer - is kindly being sent a six pack of Pieminister Vegetarian pies in order to rate and review their veggie range. One new addition to the Pieminister range this British Pie Week is a new pie created by Leah Shields called the "Saag Pie-neer". This Pea, Paneer, Spinach, Potato, Chilli and Mango pie was created as part of a com-pie-tition Pieminister recently ran to create a new pie for British Pie Week as part of their #TryAVegPie campaign.

We're looking forward to adding these pies to the 12 Pieminister Pie Reviews we've already rated!

More about the #PiePledge

In British Pie Week 2013 we introduced the #PiePledge as a way for pie eaters or pie makers to make pledges either before or during British Pie Week about what they are going to commit to do regarding pie. Find out more about what you could pledge to do this British Pie Week here.

We hope we’ve provided some ins-pie-ration for your to perhaps make a #PiePledge of your own! You can tweet your #PiePledge to @pierateers or leave a comment below - but more than anything, enjoy your pies in British Pie Week!

British Pie Week - #PiePledge 2016

I’m sure you won’t need any reminding that it is British Pie Week from 7th to 13th March this year – in fact you can see our countdown clock telling you exactly how long you have to wait in our Countdown to British Pie Week article – but you may be thinking “What can I do for British Pie Week?!”

After all, you may have read our British Pie Week article and know that in British Pie Week 2013 we ate 50 pies between the three of us and in British Pie Week 2014 we went even further and ate 55 pies - including making and trying a Python pie! And we added even more to that number last year by eating 71 pies between us! Not everyone is quite that pie-crazy!!!

But what can YOU do for British Pie Week? Well we’d love you to get involved in whatever way you can and here’s how:

Introducing the #PiePledge

British Pie Week Pie Pledge

In British Pie Week 2013 we introduced the #PiePledge as a way for pie eaters or pie makers to make pledges either before or during British Pie Week about what they are going to commit to do regarding pie. Then in 2014 we got others involved in making a #PiePledge too! And with British Pie Week coming up soon, what better thing than make your #PiePledge ready for British Pie Week?

Find out what the Pierateers commit to do during British Pie Week and how they get on by following the #PiePledge hashtag on Twitter this year!

Here’s some examples for individuals:

- #PiePledge to eat a pie every day of British Pie Week (not for the feint hearted but the Pierateers pledge to do this as standard)
- #PiePledge to “shop local” and buy a pie from an independent local supplier/butchers rather than the Supermarkets for British Pie Week
- #PiePledge to complete Pie-thagoras Theorem on one day of British Pie Week – where you eat pie for breakfast, lunch and dinner! (See our article on Pie-thagoras Theorem for more details!)
- #PiePledge to make a homemade pie – completely from scratch – this British Pie Week
- #PiePledge to eat a flavour of pie you’ve never tried before – like Zebra, Kangaroo or Squirrel

And here’s some examples for pie companies:

- #PiePledge to release a new pie flavour for British Pie Week
- #PiePledge to increase the number of pie-motions in British Pie Week to boost pie sales even further!
- #PiePledge to tweet about pies even more than usual in British Pie Week (though that's surely a given!)

We hope we’ve provided some ins-pie-ration for your #PiePledge. You can tweet your #PiePledge to @pierateers or leave a comment below - but more than anything, enjoy your pies in British Pie Week!

We'll be checking twitter for some of your #PiePledge suggestions and picking some top suggestions to add to this article in the coming days! But for now, here's our own Pieateer #PiePledge ideas for this year:

As well as taking the whole of British Pie Week off work and judging at the British Pie Awards, Pierateer RAS has commited to travelling to Wales and Scotland to rate some pies, and the plane has been booked for his flight back from Scotland so he can have "Pie In The Sky"! But not any pie - he'll be picking up the Scotch Pie World Champion from Kandy Bar!
