Countdown to the British Pie Awards 2015

British Pie Awards 2014 - Church
The home of the British Pie Awards

The British Pie Awards are firmly etched in our pie calendar. Held in St Mary’s Church in the heart of Melton Mowbray, it is a spectacular setting in the home of the pork pie. And with them once again expecting over 100 judges to rate over 800 pies from across Britain and beyond, you won't be surprised to know we've been called up again this year, having been a judge at the British Pie Awards last year and volunteer helpers at the awards in 2013.

Yes, following Pierateer Tim's judging debut last year, we have been called in again to lend our pie rating skills to the com-pie-tition, alongside TV chef Andy Bates, food critic Charles Campion and food writer Rachel Green. And while the British Pie Awards use a significantly different set of criteria to us, rather than the 7 Cs of pie rating that we have used to rate almost 500 pies on Pierate, there are very few pie experts they could call on with more ex-pie-rience than us when it comes to the pie-fect pie judge!

In fact, we're so on the ball when it comes to pie rating that we had in fact already rated and highly recommended the Supreme Champion 2014, selected from the 825 entries. That accolade went to Graham Aimson, Jackie Simpson and the Morecambe Football Club Kitchen. Their Bramley Apple pie won the title and we were not at all surprised, as we had thoroughly enjoyed this pie just months earlier. In fact, it received “Pierate Highly Recommended” status with 6.11/7! To top it all off, Graham also won top football pie for his Chicken, Ham and Leek pie which – you guessed it! – we had also rated highly during our visit with a 6.16/7!

So what have we got to look forward to at the British Pie Awards 2015?

Well... following the success of our Countdown to British Pie Week, here's our Countdown timer to the British Pie Awards 2015, happening on Wednesday 22nd April!

Of course if you are a pie producer, you need to remember you have until April 3rd to make your application! Don't miss out on this fantastic way to promote your pies! (Who knows... it might lead to a review on our world leading pie review website!)

Pie Love is in the air!

Nice Pie Review
Nice Pie entry into the "Pie Fit for a Hero" Class in 2014
We're looking forward to once again seeing what pie producers come up with in the Speciality Class, following an amazing selection of entries in last year's Speciality Class, A Pie Fit For A Hero, recognised those providing food for Britain's Armed Services in the centenary year of the start of the First World War.

This year pie romance is definitely in the air, with the Speciality Class being Bridal Pies! We've seen a few wedding pies in the past at the awards and look forward to seeing how entrants take on the challenge this year!

This year will also be the first time they have a "Free From" Gluten Free class at the British Pie Awards. Find out more about this and our top gluten free pie reviews here.

Going Dutch!

For what we believe is the the first time ever, the British Pie Awards have gone all "Britain's Got Talent" on us and have their first non-British entrant into these British Pie Awards! Perhaps ins-pie-red by success of Hungary's "Attraction" winning Britain's Got Talent almost a year ago, The Pie Shop in the Netherlands have entered two pies into the British Pie Awards 2015!

Of course those of you who keep your eyes on the pies via our Twitter feed will actually know this was announced well over a month ago in the following tweet:

While it appears The Pie Shop are quite new to the pie making business and don't believe they will be challenging for Supreme Champion 2015, it certainly would add a bit of controversy to proceedings if the Dutch were to head off with the British Pie Awards title!

Pies hit the headlines!

Of course the media has naturally been going crazy for all these pie antics - including the Leicester Mercury Newspaper, Hospitality and Catering News and the local Melton Times.

However you won't be surprised to hear we will once again be covering the event and providing regular tweet updates from Melton Mowbray as we once again get involved in the greatest pie show on Earth!
